Energy Modeller – G4
The Sustainability team within Arup’s Property London division works with a range of property clients to develop and deliver sustainability and carbon strategies for property development and refurbishment projects, both independently and as part of multi-disciplinary Arup teams. Increasingly the brief for these developments includes an aspiration to achieve Net Zero Carbon, and so energy performance is a key focus.
We are seeking an energy modelling consultant to join the growing energy modelling group within the sustainability team. This group provides some oversight of general IES modelling for Part L compliance, but is primarily focused on advanced energy modelling, including for TM54, NABERS and LEED, as well as early stage parametric modelling using tools such as Grasshopper. In addition to delivering more advanced energy modelling, this core team is responsible for training and skills development for engineers working in these areas.
The successful candidate for this role will be responsible for delivery of advanced energy modelling across a number of projects, including both undertaking modelling directly and guiding graduates and apprentices in the development of IES models.
The role will include:
- Undertaking advanced energy modelling including for TM54, NABERS and bespoke project requirements, using a combination of IES-VE, including APACHE HVAC, spreadsheets and other advanced analytics tools as needed
- Oversee junior engineers/modellers in the delivery of advanced energy modelling
- Engage with project mechanical designers to ensure the energy model is a close representation of the design, and that the modelling outcomes inform the design development
- Review/assist junior engineers in the delivery of Part L energy /compliance models
- Contribute to the development of training resources and the delivery of advanced energy modelling training for our engineers
- Contribute to the delivery of research focused on improving the tools, techniques and approaches we employ for advanced energy modelling
- The role will be based in Central London but may involve some travelling nationally and internationally
Experience and skills:
- Achieved a degree in Mechanical, Building Services, Energy Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent
- Either have achieved or be on a route to achieving chartership with an appropriate professional body
- Proven experience in IES VE and IES ApacheHVAC
- Proven experience in undertaking a range of energy modelling activities or a range of project types such as energy performance modelling, compliance and thermal comfort analysis
- Experience in Data Analysis using Excel
- Developing understanding of building HVAC systems and controls
- Able to work autonomously, stay focused and with attention to detail
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
- Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.
- Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges.
The following skills are not essential but would be beneficial to the delivery of the role:
- Experience in various additional modelling software i.e. EnergyPlus / DesignBuilder
- Experience in Matlab Simulink/TRNSYS/Modelica or equivalent
- Experience in parametric energy and thermal modelling using Grasshopper, Ladybug and Honeybee
- Experience in applying mathematical and energy simulation computer models in predicting and calibrating actual energy performance in buildings.
- Coding experience (Python, Visual Basic etc.)
- Ability to work 3D/3D CAD software i.e. AutoCAD, Sketchup, Rhino and Revit etc.
