Job Description

The post holder will be a part of a team of Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical support workers delivering a high quality Pathology service 24/7 based on the effective use of the Quality Management System.

The post holder will undertake laboratory investigations as appropriate to their banding and competencies.

The post holder will participate in all quality activities and be expected to attend departmental meetings on a regular basis.

The post holder will be required to train/teach staff of all grades within the scope of their competencies.

The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities to comply with national standards e.g. UKAS, MHRA.

The post holder will be required to lead new processes through the change control.

The post holder will be required to deputise for senior BMS.

The post holder will be required to carry out complex trouble shooting of equipment and results.

The post holder will be required to manage staff rosters.

The post holder will be required to mentor / supervise staff undertaking their IBMS specialist portfolio.

The post holder will be required to investigate QA issues to successful resolution through the non-conformance process.

The ideal candidate must have a wide experience of all aspects of general microbiology diagnostic testing and have excellent interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the desire to provide a service of the highest quality.

The candidate will have had previous experience working in a clinical laboratory and will have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology, be a team player and have an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of general microbiology diagnostic testing including microscopy, plate reading, antibiotic susceptibility testing, CL3 work, molecular microbiology, mycology, and serology.

The successful applicant will support teaching and development of all staff groups in the department, as well as participate in all aspects of quality management to assist UKAS accreditation. You will need to demonstrate the ability to lead and supervise teams and the daily responsibilities associated with staffing, workflow, and problem solving.

You will be expected to support the Band 7 BMS staff and be an integral part of the team to ensure the provision of a high-quality professional service.

You will also assist with delivery of training, competency assessments, participate in audits and assist in the supervision of more junior staff.

How the post holder is applying skills and knowledge in relation to their KSF outline

To record that the post holder is keeping up to date with current scientific and technical developments including participation in scientific meetings as appropriate

How the post holder is participating in post graduate continuing professional development to comply with the requirements of the Health Professions Council

Assist in the training and development of colleagues of any grade in the procedures for which the post holder is responsible.

Attend an annual personal development review with their manager.

Attend all mandatory and role specific training.

Equipment

Participate in the introduction of new equipment or methods to the department.

Contribute to method and laboratory instrument evaluation as directed by the Operational Manager.

Carry out appropriate preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations.

Carry first line trouble shooting of complex analytical equipment or methods.

Assist in the resolution of equipment or method failures that may include liaising with external service engineers.

Information Collection and Analysis

Comply with local and national policies and the departments Quality Management System for the safe, secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information.

Use the Laboratory and appropriate Trust Information System according to the authorised protocols.

Enter patient demographics and technical laboratory data onto the Laboratory Information System in line with the departments Quality Management System

Participate in audits and clinical trials when required.

Collect and interpret quality assurance data to ensure all excursions are followed through the non-conformance process.

Report results within the agreed turnaround time, and take appropriate action, for example communicating with colleagues and managers in the event of a situation arising preventing timely reporting of results.

The postholder may be required to carry out other relevant duties as required.
