Job Description

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery in Ayrshire & Arran is located between University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr. The Trauma Unit in University Hospital Crosshouse takes acute inpatient and day case trauma, inpatient elective services are provided at University Hospital Ayr, and trauma and elective outpatients are undertaken on both sites

Funding from Additional Cost of Teaching money has provided this opportunity to continue our commitment to teaching of undergraduate medical students. We wish to appoint Clinical Teaching Fellows (2 posts) within the departments of Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery at University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr. The posts will commence on 2nd August 2023.

The Clinical Teaching Fellows will focus on the organisation, development and provision of teaching to undergraduate medical students from Glasgow University. The successful candidate will spend approximately 8-12 hours per week on a mixture of bedside teaching and facilitated tutorials. Pursuit of a qualification in medical education is encouraged and fully funded.

The balance of time will be in clinical practice with protected time for personal development (audit, research and/or completion of certificate course in medical education. These posts will contribute to the out-of hours rota in T&O surgery, which allows the posts to attract a 50% out of hours supplement. It is not expected that on-call will interfere significantly with day time teaching, clinical or research activities.

This post is suited to trainees who have satisfactorily completed foundation training or can demonstrate equivalent competencies, and wish to develop skills in medical education or clinical research. The posts would also be highly suited to any candidate who has completed core surgical training and wishes to develop sub-specialty experience and improve their curriculum vitae prior to specialty training application. Funding towards a medical education qualification (for example, a post graduate certificate in medical education) will be made available. Alternatively successful candidates may opt to undertake their own portfolio of development aligned to their personal needs and career aspirations. Where an appointee decides not to enroll in the certificate course in medical education, up to £1,250 will be made available to support funding of personal development activities, which must be agreed with the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director of Medical Education.

Please note that these posts do not carry educational approval with the Dean.

You will be fully registered with the GMC with a current Licence to Practice, and must have completed foundation or equivalent training. Evidence of an interest in, and an aptitude for teaching would be advantageous.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr David Wilkin (Assistant Director of Medical Education at Crosshouse), Dr Jane Collie (Assistant Director of Medical Education at Crosshouse) tel: 01563 521133, or Dr Hugh Neill (Director of Medical Education) tel: 01563 527537.

Interviews will take place on 19th April AM
