Job Introduction

BBC Scotland’s weeknight TV news programme The Nine is looking for a Senior Journalist to join its production team.

This role involves regularly preparing items on domestic and international stories and outputting The Nine and its sister programmes (the weekly discussion programme Seven Days, shorter weekend news bulletin The Seven, and entertainment programme The Edit).

We are looking for a producer with significant experience working as a journalist, particularly those who have a track record of making or commissioning high-quality video content.

On a daily basis, you will write scripts of the highest standard, cut video and find news-making contributors to be interviewed on air.

To be a success in this role, you will need to be passionate about analysing and explaining the news, coming up with creative ways of telling stories and identifying ways of making those stories work for digital audiences.

This role involves some weekend working, on a rotation basis.


Main Responsibilities
  • Producing items for The Nine and its sister programmes
  • Outputting programmes
  • Pitching original stories and guest ideas
  • Developing creative treatments for TV and online
  • Booking contributors for filmed packages and interviews
  • Briefing, and collaborating with, presenters for on-air interviews and discussions
  • Leading other members of the team by example and practice, while developing strong relationships with the wider BBC Scotland news team, and beyond
Are you the right candidate?

You will be familiar the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines - and understand BBC News’ need for impartiality.

You will have experience of outputting news programmes or leading projects.

You will have first class news judgement.

You will have a desire to find original stories.

You will be able to write engaging scripts.

You will be able to make big decisions under pressure.

You will have excellent people and communication skills.

You will be familiar desktop video editing software.

Contract: Fixed Term Contracts

Location: Glasgow

You are eligible to apply for an internal role if you are either on a BBC Continuing (Permanent) contract, a BBC Fixed Term contract, a casual contract or freelance contract and you have worked continuously for 6 months.

Only internal staff are eligible to apply for the role on an attachment basis. You need to be on a continuing (permanent) or fixed-term contract.
