Job Description

Department

The Department of Archaeology at the University of York is ranked 18th in the world in the QS rankings. We are based in both the King’s Manor in the heart of the historic city of York and at Heslington West campus. Our vibrant community consists of over 90 staff and over 600 students, with growing international representation. We carry out international, impact-oriented and interdisciplinary teaching and research of the highest quality through our strong network of partnerships. The student experience is of paramount importance to the Department and we maintain a high level of student satisfaction. Equality, diversity and inclusion are at our core and we promote a collegial environment in which staff and students feel supported and valued.

Role

The BioArCh facility within the Department of Archaeology is seeking to appoint two Grade 4 laboratory technicians to cover a period of parental leave. You will join a vibrant research community of academic members of staff, research staff, and post-graduate students. As a technician in BioArCh, you will develop valuable experience and skills alongside our expert technical team and contribute directly to our high quality research in archaeological science. The role will include operational, laboratory, and instructional duties. You will be instrumental in the continuous operation of the laboratory facilities, prepare a wide variety of archaeological samples for scientific analyses, and assist with training students and facilitating their projects. You will be responsible for aspects of maintaining laboratory inventory, administering our sample database and storage, carrying out health and safety duties, and managing goods in/out.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have completed relevant A levels or HNC, while a completed undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. biology, archaeology, chemistry) is desirable. You will be familiar with working in a laboratory setting and have experience in applying health and safety procedures to your work, including CoSHH and risk assessments. You will have a track record of performing work to a high standard, and able to manage your own time effectively working independently and as part of a team. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and show a willingness to learn and develop while maintaining a positive and open attitude towards teammates.
