Information for applicants
The Post
We are looking for a part-time Art and Design technician for 18 hours per week, term time only, to be worked over 3 days a week (although there is some flexibility in this). This is an excellent opportunity for an able and enthusiastic technician to join this well-established and creative team. The person appointed must have a commitment to supporting colleagues and also a commitment to equality of opportunity and the learning and well-being of young people.
The post involves providing support to the art staff and students across a variety of disciplines, including painting, printmaking, 3D and Digital etc. We are particularly keen to hear of the skills that a potential candidate can bring to the role. Technicians are also responsible for overseeing Health and Safety in the department, which involves giving demonstrations on how to use equipment as well as supervising students and making sure that equipment is used safely and in accordance with CLEAPPS guidelines. In addition, the work involves care of the department as a whole, for example by looking after student work in storage, tidying and care of materials in the studios.
There are also administrative duties such as supporting student trips and the ordering of supplies and equipment. Flexibility to take part in our foreign visits would also be useful but not essential. We run 1-2 foreign visits a year currently, and the technicians take a big role in the organisation and administration of these.
The Department
The Art and Design Department is an energetic and supportive team in a very successful College. This year there are 5 teaching staff, and 3 technicians, including the vacant post. Departmental meetings are held regularly.
Accommodation and Resources
The Department is accommodated in a purpose-built teaching block. The extensive facilities comprise specialist teaching rooms, a large open sculpture area, a garden, a staff base room, a technician base room, and storerooms. Staff are provided with computer access in the departmental base rooms. There is a specialist collection of software, equipment (including printmaking, 3D and Photographic facilities), audio-visual and book resources within the Department; further resources are available from our very well-stocked College Library. The department currently uses Microsoft Teams as part of our daily administration and communication etc.
Extra-Curricular Activities
The Art and Design Department is a substantial contributor to the College’s Enrichment programme, and we offer a variety of short courses which include Illustration, Ceramics (Beginners and Advanced), Photography, (Digital and Chemical) alongside Creative Drawing & 3D courses. The current technicians contribute to the college’s Enrichment programme by running some of the above courses and there is the potential for the new technician to become involved depending on the skills and experience that they can offer (this would be in addition to the 18 hrs of technician time). Technicians are also involved in organising models for our Life Drawing programme.
We also take students on national and international visits to support their learning; past destinations have included London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Venice.
We have an annual exhibition for the Art and Photography courses, and also extensive web galleries of student work on the department’s website (www.hillsart.net).
We do hope that the above information goes someway into understanding the role, however, if you have any further questions then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We do hope that you’ll apply!
