Surface Transports Network Management Control Centre helps to ‘Keep London Moving’ by supporting and managing the movement of people and goods on the road network. We report the status of the network to our customers and road users. We want our streets to be safe for everyone to use and pleasant places to live, work and move about efficiently.
We are a 24/7 operation that is responsible for running Surface Transport services across the capital. Services are broad and dynamic and include monitoring the network, coordinating incidents, managing bus routes and bus disruptions, making sure our tunnels are safe and operating effectively and supplying real time network information to our customers and partners. We are at our best when we come together in response to an incident or delivering iconic events like RideLondon and the London Marathon.

Role
You will be responsible for:
- Responding to and managing real time incidents focusing on the safety and protection of pedestrians, our passengers (buses) and cyclists.
- You will ensure people are able to move about safely and efficiently on all the surface modes of transport.
- You will be responsible for real time communication with our partners including bus drivers, bus operating companies and our emergency services partners.
- You will use of a range of operational tools and systems to handle calls and log response activity on our systems to keep London moving.
Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Ways of Working
- Are you able to work collaboratively as part of a high performing team to achieve a shared goal? (Essential)
- Can you multitask and prioritise your work in a dynamic operational environment? (Essential)
- Do you have a good knowledge of the London road network system and the elements that contribute towards minimising congestion? (Desirable)
- Are able to remain calm under pressure and prioritise tasks in a pressurised environment. (Essential)
- Do you have control centre experience? (Desirable).
- Are you experienced in providing real-time communications to partners / clients? (Desirable)
- Do you have a good knowledge of Incident Management and capable of coordinating multiple and or large-scale incidents? (Desirable)
- Are you computer-literate and able to use multiple systems in a dynamic environment? (Essential)
Shifts
Working as part of a 24/7 operation in our advanced control centre in Southwark, you will be working a shift roster made up of early shifts (06:30 – 14:30), late shifts (14:00 – 22:00) and night shifts (21:30 – 07:00) on a rotational basis. There are some variations in the shift lengths on the roster particularly on weekends.
