Job Description

House of Commons

The House of Commons is a unique and exciting place to work right at the heart of the UK's thriving democratic system.

Behind the scenes, the House of Commons Service is made up of more than 3,000 employees who support and facilitate the smooth day to day running of the House. They provide professional services to Members of Parliament, their staff, and the wider parliamentary community.

Staff Benefits

In addition to your salary, we offer an attractive range of benefits including:

  • 30 days’ annual leave (increasing to 35 days after first full leave year).
  • Civil Service pension with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • Access to training and development.
  • Flexible working.
  • Interest free season ticket loan and bicycle loan.

Introduction

The Chamber and Participation Team (CPT) brings together all the disciplines that support the House of Commons Chamber within one coherent structure – the procedural offices that facilitate the core function of legislating, the operational teams who focus on ensuring that the Chamber runs effectively and efficiently, and the public-facing teams who promote Parliament’s role and seek to engage citizens across the UK with parliamentary business.

The Role

We deliver face-to-face and online educational programmes and learning resources for schools, teachers, home educators and school-age children across the UK. We also manage engagement activities and campaigns that target the broader UK population, prioritising people and communities who are less engaged with Parliament and Members’ work.

This role will support the day to day running of the Learn with the Lords Programme, which provides opportunities for school aged young people to engage with members of the House of Lords, through an extensive Programme of online and in-person sessions and events.

The Education and Engagement Programme Support Officer is responsible for both the smooth running of the programme and facilitation of the programme with young people. You will oversee the administration and data management for the Programme, managing the central inbox and fielding enquiries from internal and external customers/stakeholders.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • Facilitating up to 6 Learn with the Lords Online sessions per week, warmly welcoming the school and member to the session, screensharing material on behalf of the member and providing technical support
  • Managing the day-to-day administration behind Learn with the Lords in School visits, managing communications with both members and school/youth groups and acting as the main point of contact
  • Managing the running of Learn with the Lords in the Education Centre, liaising with the Education Centre team and providing members with a written/verbal briefing ahead of their sessions
  • Managing the organisation of the central team inbox
  • Working with the Good Data team as a Data Champion, promoting good data practice in the Learn with the Lords team

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of tailoring language and messages for different stakeholders and audiences including young people whilst upholding the values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Strong IT skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel and Word) and database management. Ability to perform more complex IT functions, such as mail merge and Excel formulae.
  • Experience in providing excellent customer service to a range of audiences, exercising tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong organisational skills, with experience in supporting a busy team and prioritising tasks to meet tight deadlines.

Next Steps and Additional Information

  • Application Form - If you would like to apply for this role, please submit an application providing evidence against criteria 1-4 in the Job Description.

More information on the role and the full criteria can be found in the Job Description.

Please note that most job offers will be made at the minimum of the salary range, other than in exceptional circumstances.
