Job Description

Blackpool Parent Infant Relationship Service provides specialist assessment and intervention for Parents and Families that live within the Blackpool area.

The administrative base for this post is Kirkham Health Centre, Kirkham.

The post holder will be a qualified Nursery Nurse employed to work in a Parent Infant Practitioner role within Blackpool Parent-Infant Relationship Service.

The role will centre around supporting the mother and infant to develop physically and emotionally and nurture their developing relationship and attachment.

All activities undertaken by the Parent Infant Practitioner (Nursey Nurse) will be at the discretion/delegation of the Clinical Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist, after appropriate in-service training has been given and level of competency demonstrated.

Provide help and support to parents to enable them to make informed choices in relation to parenting giving evidence-based advice and information in respect to baby care, development, infant feeding, breastfeeding, weaning, behaviour management, play, hygiene, dental care, accident prevention, crying and soothing, attachment, parenting skills and local community facilities.

Provide intensive support to new parents in a variety of settings including clients’ homes, Family hubs, G.Ps Surgery, health centre or other local community centre under the direction of the parent-infant clinicians, taking into account the diverse needs of the community.

To assist in assessing baby’s health, well-being and related needs and contribute to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.

To support mothers in general management of baby care, demonstrating an understanding of how this may be hindered by the presence of mental illness.

Provide practical and emotional support to help women prepare for the transition into parenthood.

Organise and facilitate group activities and individual interventions to promote parenting skills under supervision of the Parent-infant clinicians.

Liaise with multi-agency professionals as appropriate.

Work within local and national child safeguarding procedures and have an occasional requirement to attend conference/core groups with other professionals.

Support partners, siblings and wider family members prior to arrival of the baby.
