Job Description

We are looking for Practitioner Psychologists (Clinical/Forensic/Counselling) for our acute mental health wards, based in Bodmin at either Fletcher or Harvest ward . Our acute inpatient provision is a pivotal part of the acute care pathway.

We have a really strong commitment to career development within the Trust, supporting people from undergraduate psychology backgrounds into training posts, such as the Clinical Associate Psychologist role and beyond.

The Trust has a clear management and supervision structure that is led by a Head of Psychological Professions, who is also part of the Trust’s Senior Management Team. Inpatient services are supported by a lead Consultant Psychologist as well as a Consultant Psychologist working as an Approved/Responsible Clinician. Clinical Psychologists are currently employed in the acute mental health wards, the Low Secure Unit (Bowman) and the Rehabilitation Unit (Fettle).

The successful applicant will initially be employed at Band 7, progressing into a Band 8a position after two years. Progression will be based on the successful completion of competencies and a formal review.

The successful applicant will be well supported in their development by senior Clinical Psychologists within the service. This will include the development of a set of individual competencies, agreed in consideration of their current level of experience and the step up to a Band 8a job description.

We are developing our inpatient teams and services in line with the principles of effective inpatient care including purposeful admissions, therapeutic, person centred and trauma informed care. Psychologists and psychological professionals are key partners in these developments.

The successful candidates will work within a multi-disciplinary inpatient team. The post holder will apply skills and expertise in clinical and risk assessments and formulations, collaboratively develop formulations and care plans, facilitate group and individual interventions, and provide case consultations and reflective sessions for staff as well as teaching, training and supervision.

Your expertise, training and experience will be valued, together with a commitment to supporting your career development and progression, with ongoing learning opportunities. Due to our commitment to your professional growth, we are developing a career progression model in which our 8a psychology staff are able to rotate between differing inpatient environments and crisis settings every two years. Following a full rotation, further career pathways and opportunities, such as the Mental Health Act Approved/Responsible Clinician training pathway become available. This provides a framework through which we can meaningfully reward our talented psychology team, should they want to progress within the profession whilst maintaining a clinical leadership role.

We’re an NHS community and mental health provider Trust based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We deliver community and hospital-based care to improve people’s physical and mental health. We also provide specialist support to people with dementia or a learning disability.

We are a people organisation and people matter to us. As part of the team, you'll help support the health and wellbeing of the people who live and visit this beautiful part of the UK.

Over 4,000 people make up the Trust. This includes doctors, nurses, therapists, plus admin and support staff.

We work in people's homes, in community clinics and bases. Some staff work from one of our 13 community hospitals. Our aspiration is to have great people, provide great care, be a great place to work and a great partner.

Approximately 568,000 people live here. A third of people who live in Cornwall are supported by acute hospital services in Devon. As a result, we also work closely with our partners in Devon. In the summer, and during other holidays lots of people choose to visit the area. This increases the numbers of people who use our services.
