Your profile

Ocean Science Consulting Limited (OSC) seeks to expand its UK-based team. This is a rare opportunity for permanent and full-time employment as an Instrument Technician. Main duties will include servicing, deploying, troubleshooting, repairing, and modifying high tech, scientific equipment/instrumentation. The candidate will be responsible for, inter alia, stock control of various hydrophone technologies and other oceanographical monitoring equipment, working primarily within the commercial wing of the company. This role involves a combination of working onshore and offshore.

Applicants must be technically minded, able to undertake field-equipment installation, operation, deployment, recovery, and maintenance at a high level both at the hardware (including circuit boards, i.e., electrical engineering skills) and software level. Ability to download, and quality control data from equipment for scientists in the Research and Development (R&D) wing of the company. The successful applicant will assist with equipment stock control and coordination, planning and execution of field work, and supplier liaison. The successful applicant will ideally have prior experience with marine instrumentation (e.g. cabled and autonomous hydrophone systems, echosounders, radars, CTDs, ADCPs, and ROVs).

Responsibilities:


  • Equipment preparation, servicing, and maintenance;
  • Equipment installation and operation for offshore projects; and,
  • Supplier liaison and sourcing instruments/components;
  • System design, development, and testing.

A successful candidate will have the following:

Required:
  • A degree in engineering, or relevant experience with marine instrumentation;
  • Experience with oceanographic instruments (e.g. echosounder, radar, ADCP, hydrophone, etc.) including configuration, operation, maintenance, data downloading, and processing;
  • Understanding of oceanographic equipment specifications (e.g. hydrophones, junction boxes, amplifiers, acoustic filters, etc.);
  • Passive Acoustic Monitoring equipment configuration, testing and data collection;
  • Ability to meet deadlines;
  • Genuine interest about the business and industry, including commercial awareness;
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Full, clean UK drivers licence;
  • Ability to lift 20 kg;
  • Current valid BOSIET and O&G medical; and,
  • Must be legally allowed to work in the UK prior to employment, and possess a UK bank account.

Desirable:
  • Processing oceanographic datasets (CTD, synoptic satellite-derived or modelled data);
  • Experience working with wind, tidal, military, and/or O&G sectors;
  • Programming experience in R, Python, or MatLab.
This position is open only to those entitled legally to work in the UK and involves working offshore. Timelines are often tight, and workloads must be prioritised accordingly. This will mean being involved in multiple project simultaneously; therefore, multitasking is key.
