Job Description
The Oncology Team is located across two sites, Ipswich and Colchester. Whilst the advertised role is primarily located at Colchester Hospital, there is also an opportunity and an expectation that some cross site working will take place in the future. The new trust ESNEFT is developing a model of partnership bringing exciting new service development opportunities. To complement the established services, the ESNEFT oncology team are committed to collaborative working, to ensure the long term sustainability of oncology service provision and to increase opportunities, training and research for medical staff.
- Multidisciplinary team working is a key component of the working in the department.
- To prescribe chemotherapy and manage treatment related complications
- New patient assessment/ Ward visits/ Acute Oncology Service support
- To provide Medical cover to the Chemotherapy Day Unit
- To provide cover for chemotherapy review clinics when required
- Radiotherapy reviews (and planning if suitably qualified)
- Ward rounds/supporting the junior staff with in-patient care
- Undergraduate/Postgraduate/Nursing teaching
- Participation in clinical trials
- In addition to the above the post-holder will be expected to attend the relevant MDTs within the area of interest that he develops, support the research team in clinical trial accrual, and take an active part in Junior Doctor and Medical Student teaching.
- Although this post is not required to take part in an on-call rota the post-holder should be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Colchester is the Regional Radiotherapy Centre for North East and Mid-Essex serving a population of 700,000. A new 5 bunker state of the art Radiotherapy Centre opened in June 2014 at Colchester General Hospital. The Department has a full range of equipment, which includes four matched Varian TrueBeam Linacs, undertaking IGRT and IMRT. Localisation is carried out on a Toshiba Wide Bore CT scanner and planning is carried out using Prosoma Virtual Simulation Software. All of these units are fully networked with the Eclipse planning systems via the ARIA network. There are full mouldroom facilities and an Orthovoltage and Superficial unit as well as HDR brachytherapy.
The new Collingwood Centre is based at Colchester Hospital. Treatment is also delivered using a Chemotherapy Bus across the Colchester & Tendring District.
The Collingwood Centre is a central integrated cancer centre that combines first class radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and medical treatments, alongside a holistic range of therapies, information, support and advice for cancer patients and their loved ones.
The Cancer Centre is a centre of excellence for all residents in mid and north-east Essex and the surrounding areas. It provides state-of-the-art facilities in which to deliver first class medical care and the most advanced Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy treatments, alongside a range of complementary and alternative therapies, in a purpose-built sympathetic environment, which enables the best possible holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to the care of all cancer patients and their loved ones.
There are currently 28 beds on West Bergholt Ward for Oncology and Haematology patients.
The Oncology Department has close links with St Helena Hospice in Colchester and Farleigh Hospice in Chelmsford, both of which provide in-patient and day-care facilities.
The hospital Specialist Palliative Care team consists of a Palliative Care consultant and several Nurse Practitioners
