Job Description

Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory. Our laboratory carries out testing for renal and stem cell transplantation for NHS teaching Hospitals in Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester. We are also a supra regional centre involved in the provision of HLA selected platelets and immunogenetic diagnostic testing to many hospitals in the Midlands and North of England.

You’ll join our friendly team and play an important role performing, analysing and interpreting a wide range of specialist scientific and technical procedures and investigations relating to the issue of results for transplant patients and donors impacting directly on patient care. In addition, you will be contributing to the coordination and supervision of the work, training and conduct of scientific and support staff. Experience working in a Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory would be advantageous. We will provide you with extensive induction and training and ongoing development to support you in this role and achieve your career ambitions.

Working within a UKAS and EFI accredited laboratory that promotes the highest standards, you will also be required to participate in the out of hours on-call rota, providing HLA typing and crossmatching in support of deceased donor transplantation.

Main duties of the job

The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory carries out HLA typing, crossmatching and antibody screening in support of solid organ and stem cell transplantation, the provision of specialist blood products and immunogenetic and disease association testing.

We have direct involvement with clinicians, for example, in transplantation, we use our test results to provide advise on the compatibility of a potential organ or stem cell donor and the recipient.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Working within a modern laboratory environment you will be operating some of the latest laboratory analysers and testing systems to produce accurate and timely test results. Tests include molecular (DNA) based, including gene sequencing and multiplex solid phase platform assays.
  • You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff.
  • You will be required to handle blood and tissue samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment.
  • The role may require you to undertake urgent on-call work providing 24/7 testing and advice, depending on specialty.


This is a full time, 37.5 hours per week, permanent post. The laboratory core operating hours are 8am to 5pm.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of the use of a range of laboratory analysers and equipment in a clinical service laboratory setting
  • Experience in a range of scientific techniques
  • Experience of working with Information Technology

Qualifications and Training

  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Evidence of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development
