Level 11 West is a 18 bedded, mixed sex, Trauma & Orthopaedic Ward. We are a friendly and supportive team providing care for patients admitted to the hospital as result of an emergency admission. The ward provides care for a variety of injuries including fractures, soft tissue trauma and spinal injuries. Injuries can vary from relatively minor lacerations to complex road traffic trauma patients offering nurses a chance to develop expertise in a range of Orthopaedic skills.
We are looking to recruit a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to work as part of this friendly and supportive team. You must be enthusiastic with excellent communication skills in order to liaise effectively with the multi-disciplinary teams and strive to provide high standards of care. You will be a highly motivated and dedicated to your role and own personal development and have had experience as a Band 5 nurse. We are able to offer opportunities for development and have developed an in-house accredited Orthopaedic module, which will be offered to Nurses working in the Trauma and Orthopaedic departments.
You will be expected to deputise in the absence of the ward manager, coordinate the ward and manage the flow of admissions.
To support the ward manager in providing effective clinical leadership that ensures patient safety at all times together with high quality patient care.
- To assist the ward sister in the effective management of prevention and control of infection within the ward area.
- You will be able to communicate effectively both within the department and to external partners.
- To manage a small team of nurses and be responsible for mentoring and assessing their skills and be responsible for their annual appraisals.
- To manage to work within allocated resources and assist in the management of the budget.
- To act as role model and expert practitioner.
- To undertake delegated responsibility in the absence of the ward manage
- To manage the day to day activity with the ward to allow flow through the ward in a timely manner to reduce the LOS and ensure that quality of care is maintained throughout the 24 hour period

- In the absence of the Ward manager, to be a visible and accessible presence on the ward to whom the staff, patients and their relatives/careers can turn to for assistance.
- To act as an expert for the care of patients, providing effective leadership and acting as a positive role model.
- Assist the Ward Manager to ensure that there is regular review of documentation practice and that focused action plans are developed when areas of concern are identified.
- To ensure that admissions, transfers and discharges are planned in accordance with Trust policy, liaising effectively with partner agencies to ensure best outcome for the patient.
- To be responsible for ensuring that there is adherence to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults protocols within clinical practice.
- To work in partnership with the Infection Control Team to ensure best practice and to assist the Ward manager in ensuring that there are effective systems and processes in place for the prevention and control of infection. To ensure the adherence of all staff in infection control policies whilst leading the shift. To assist the Ward manager in ensuring there is full participation by the clinical areas in the Trust Perfect Ward audits.
- To participate in monitoring the cleanliness in the ward, liaising with housekeeping services to maintain high standards.
- To ensure that the nutritional needs of patients are assessed according to Trust policy. To assist the Ward manager in monitoring the catering service to the Ward, liaising with housekeeping and dietetic services to ensure that the nutritional needs of patients are met. To participate in the implementation of Protected Meal Times.
