Over a period of one year, you will have first-hand experience in the front line of our business. We’re looking for students who have a passion for circularity and tackling waste, who want to gain real-life experience in a fast paced and complex environment. If you’re ambitious, driven, and eager to show what you can do, this is a great way to start your career in sustainability.

Your Role

You’d be part of our National Sustainability Team, headed by the UK Director of Sustainability and Social Impact. This team covers a wide remit from net zero and climate, to diversity and inclusion, but this placement would have a primary focus on circularity and packaging.

Your Responsibilities

As a circular placement student in our team you will have a focus on finding opportunities for circular supply chain solutions, and sustainable packaging throughout our UK logistics business.

This role will be based in one of our offices (either Milton Keynes/ Birmingham/ London/ Cambridge) and will include regular travel to our operational sites across the UK (up to 30% of working week). You will need to be able to stay away from home during the placement and hotel accommodation will be provided by the company.

You will be working to help us rethink how we move goods to eliminate waste, single use plastics and support a circular economy
  • Eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging through redesign and innovation
  • Moving from single-use to reuse
  • Ensuring 100% of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable
  • Increasing the reuse, collection, and recycling or composting of plastic packaging in practice

The type of work you will be involved in will include:

1. Working with teams to uncover opportunities reduce waste in operational processes
2. Working with our suppliers and procurement team to find more sustainable packaging options
3. Researching to innovate and build best practice for circular supply chains
4. Building a portfolio of best practice case studies to encourage wider adoption within the business

Your Skills and Experiences

  • Currently studying for a degree qualification in sustainability or related degree
  • A passion for circular economy and continuous improvement
  • Hardworking and committed
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • A good team player
  • A willingness to learn
  • Driving licence/transport not essential but there is an expectation of travel around the UK as part of this role so if candidates do not have access to transport access to a main train line to connect with larger cities across the UK is beneficial.

Key Information:

Placement dates: 11th Sept 2023 – 6th Sept 2024

Working hours: Mon-Friday 09:00-17:30 (hybrid working)

Office/Travel: Students will be expected to have a core base in one of the offices listed where they will work from the majority of the time. There will also be an expectation to travel across the UK to other sites to meet teams & research opportunities. Hotel accommodation will be provided for overnight stays.

Interview dates: Interviews will be held virtually. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Post offer: We know that it is quite some time between offer and start date for our placement students. Our interview process will be conducted virtually but after successful offers are made, candidates will be connected with fellow students, invited to visit their site and join preparation calls with our future talent team.
