This is an exciting opportunity to make your first steps in the dynamic Data Center industry as a Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Engineering Technician Apprentice (CFM Apprentice – Mechanical) in our Hemel Hempstead and/or Dagenham facility.
During your apprenticeship you will work with our data center team, alongside experienced Electrical & Mechanical engineers to gain hands on experience and knowledge of data center best practice including hardware management, installations, implementation, support and monitoring.
While becoming a Mechanical/HVAC Engineering expert through on-the-job learning as well as day release, you will have the possibility to work with the various departments in our organization to acquire an all-round view of our business.

Your responsibilities
- Assist the Critical Facilities Manager and team in the performance of various activities. These can be either security services, administrative tasks, project preparation or critical infrastructure maintenance
- You will undertake installation, testing, servicing, commissioning, replacement, maintenance, and repair of a range of (mechanical) equipment, as part of planned preventative and reactive maintenance programmes under supervision and guidance. This also includes preparing work areas to undertake work related activities
- You will learn the technical and administrative aspects of running a data center from A to Z, such as: starting a work order to test cooling equipment, when/how to contact vendors, to performing maintenance on cooling equipment, and complete site logs and gather data for permits, such as MOPs and scripts
- You will read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation as well as communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification
- You will carry out/support Isolation, Earthing and Reinstatement of Critical Data Centre Electrical and Mechanical equipment and systems as and when required
- You will perform and manage BMS monitoring and carry out primary response to Critical & Non-Critical Alarms, as well as perform diagnostic of alarms, generate RCA escalations, instigate repairs and process accordingly when they occur
- You will assist with operating, inspecting and maintaining cooling installations; determine systems are functioning as per design, and that maintenance is performed in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and relevant procedures
Your profile
- Interest in the data center environment, and specifically either IT, network, security or mechanical and/or electrical engineering
- Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well as part of a team, as well as working independently
- Enthusiastic, eager to learn, pro-active, determined and flexible to adapt to a dynamic environment and demand from the client or supervisor
- Ability to manage your time and prioritize day-to-day tasks
- Keen to analyze problems and think of possible solutions using logic and reasoning
- Computer literacy, comfortable with MS Office 365
- Flexibility to travel to other locations as required at short notice
- GCSE or equivalent English and Maths (Grade 4 or above) is desired
- Undergo full security checks to BS7858:2019
About the Apprenticeship Program
- Course: Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Engineering Technician (Ref: ST0322)
- You will be enrolled at United Colleges Group in North London. The college is easily accessible via tube connection
- This role will have 80% on the job training and 20% college attendance at a local college enabling the attainment of a recognized qualification
- Apprenticeship level: 3
- Expected duration: 36 months
