Job Description

About ARU:
We are ranked in the world’s top 350 institutions in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and we are a global university transforming lives through innovative, inclusive, and entrepreneurial education and research. Our research institutes and four faculties bridge scientific, technical, and creative fields. We deliver impactful research which tackles pressing issues and makes a real difference to our communities. Our academic excellence has been recognised by the UK’s Higher Education funding bodies, with 16 of our research areas assessed as world leading. In 2021, we were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for our world-leading music therapy work.

About the Role:
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic scientist to join the project team of the first UK National Eye Health and Hearing Study (uknehs.org.uk), for Phase 1 that involves measuring sensory health among a sample of 1000 adults in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The Project Management Group is hosted by the Vision and Eye Research Institute (VERI) at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. VERI is part of the new School of Medicine. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) review, VERI’s profile was rated ‘World Leading, ‘Internationally Excellent’ and ‘International’.

You’ll work within a multi-disciplinary research team on this project that investigates the prevalence of vision and hearing loss in the population, the barriers to uptake of care, and the scope of existing care pathways to meet known and unmet demand. You will be expected to interact effectively with stakeholders across the public sector, charitable and academic spheres, and will need considerable leadership skills that also involves managing a fieldwork team involved in community-based data collection.

With a Degree plus a PhD or Professional Doctorate in a Medical, Allied or Public Health discipline, with experience in bio-statistics and data/evidence synthesis, you will also have experience of quantitative research methodology, writing research papers, data analysis and working with patients and the public. You will need to have experience in public health research and expertise in the conduct of and data collection from population-based health studies.

The ability to speak additional languages will be an advantage. You’ll have a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to the research area and the ability to critically analyse data using quantitative and qualitative techniques, an enthusiastic and flexible approach and good interpersonal and negotiating skills. Prior expertise in the eyecare or sensory health is not necessary.
