Job Description

The role of Rail Engineering is to provide technical solutions across the railway. It covers different engineering disciplines and apprentices will undertake core learning and specialise in one discipline. The disciplines include track (including minor works), electrification, civils, signalling, telecommunications, and traction & rolling stock.

Those working within the Rail Engineering industry are responsible for the safe construction, installation, maintenance, and renewal of the rail to ensure a safe and reliable railway for customers. Under the mentorship of Senior Engineering leaders, you will be empowered to grow and develop.

What you’ll be doing

As a Rail Engineer , your day will be varied, spending time on site, in a depot or in an office. You will need to understand how the railway works as an integrated, complex system and take proactive actions and decisions to avoid any equipment, process, and systems failures. This will include involvement in areas including:

· The construction, installation, renewal, enhancement, and modification of the railway.

· Fault finding and diagnosis, maintenance, and replacement of a range of complex systems and components.

· Ensuring assets are installed, enhanced, replaced, maintained, tested, and inspected to specification maintaining required records and making recommendations for and delivery of system improvements.

To gain the required skills and competencies to complete the standard requirements, you will undertake a planned rotation within appropriate departments. You will also attend part-time educational classes to achieve the knowledge, behaviours and competencies as required by the apprenticeship. You will also need to undertake internal training to upskill yourself in the relevant competencies required to join Network Rail.

What you’ll get out of it

This Apprenticeship Standard is at Level 5.

This Apprenticeship Standard aligns with the current edition of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

The experience gained and responsibility held by the apprentice on completion of the apprenticeship partially contributes to the requirements for IEng.

The wide range of skills you can acquire from this apprenticeship will be transferrable to other disciplines and professions – we will aim to support your career development throughout your time with Network Rail.

The entry requirements

· A Level BBB including Mathematics and/or Physical Sciences (120 UCAS points) or;

· BTEC National Diploma DDM, including Level 3 Mathematics and Physical Sciences (128 UCAS points) or;

· EAL Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies, D, including: Further Engineering Mathematics; Electrical and Electronic Engineering Principles; and other options relevant to Electrical and Electronic Engineering or;

· Access to HE qualifications with 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits, with at least half the course in Mathematics and Physical Science subjects (122 UCAS points) or;

· Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 120 UCAS points and including Mathematics and Physical Sciences

· Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above) or;

· English language qualifications for international students: IELTS score of 6.0 or Cambridge Proficiency or Advanced Grade C, and a Mathematics qualification equivalent to reformed GCSE grade 4 or above, as assessed by UK NARIC.
