Job Description
The Role
We are thrilled to be creating a new piece of theatre with our young company. Directed by Steph Kempson, and written by Tom Wentworth, this part period, part fantasy play will explore the lives and writings of the Brontë siblings. We are looking for an experienced and ambitious designer, capable of tackling the challenges of a show of this nature.

Before Jane, Rochester, Heathcliff and Cathy, there was Glasstown, Angria and Gondal.
Meet the magnificent (and precocious) Bronte siblings and their wuthering flights of fantasy, in their magical lands where bloody duels are fought and love affairs last a lifetime. But what happens when fantasy and reality blur?
Trying to escape the real world, Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell battle for ultimate control of their fictional universe. What if there is no escape?
Inspired by the Brontes’ earliest writings, BTA second year students go full Bronte in collaboration with director Stephanie Kempson (Fringe First award winner for Breathless) and writer Tom Wentworth (BBC's Ralph and Katie; Pentabus' Little Bits of Ruined Beauty). This bold and boisterous Bronte-fest celebrates the power of imagination to transport us to other worlds – and back again.
Other info
This is an ambitious show, and we are looking for someone who is up for a challenge. There is a cast of 22, post 16 students.
The production will take place at The Egg Theatre, one of Theatre Royal Bath’s three auditoria. It’s a small, intimate venue seating 126. It’s a versatile space, and this piece is being devised to be performed in-the-round.
We are very open to discussing the balance of days spent in the room and working remotely; we don’t expect the designer to be in the room full-time.
Our creative and production teams are all staffed by professionals – it’s only our actors who are students – so the designer is supported by a PM, Costume Supervisor and Costume Assistant., and will work alongside a SM, ASM, and DSM.
- All rehearsals take place in central Bath, off-site
- The materials budget for the show is approximately £6,500 (this includes set, costume and props - making/sourcing)
- We don't have in-house builders or painters (or the space to do this) - everything is outsourced by our PM and taken from the budget above
- All fees are inclusive of travel and all expenses, so a South West base is preferable.
