Job description
British Study Centres Young Learners (BSC YL) runs English summer courses in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Malta for International students aged 8-17. There are Academic Manager positions for Manchester.
Purpose of the role
The Academic Manager (AM) is responsible for the smooth, efficient and successful running of all academic aspects of the designated Young Learner Centre. The Academic Manager oversees the running of all academic processes, including staff induction, teacher training, academic administration, and team management of academic team in close collaboration with Head Office.
Responsibilities
Academic
- Run student test, levelling and placement efficiently
- Timetabling
- Manage academic resources including promotion of bespoke BSC NGL books
- Run INSETs
- Carry out at least one observation/feedback for each TAL
- Administer student reports and certificates
- Hold regular academic meetings with teaching staff
- Cover teaching if required
Teacher Training
- Potentially deliver a course of teacher training to a number of visiting group leaders
- Raise the awareness of language acquisition in young learners at primary and secondary school level
- Present a range of techniques for teaching English to young learners
- Explore how to select, design and evaluate the use of a range of new learning materials in the classroom
Centre & Head Office
- Work with the management team to ensure smooth running of the course
- Hold regular whole staff meetings with management team
- Plan and deliver clear and informative student inductions with the management team
- Communicate regularly with HO
- Respond to all requests/correspondence from HO in a timely fashion
- Complete any administration tasks as required by HO in a timely manner
Social & Pastoral
- Work with management team to ensure academic and social programmes are integrated
- Participate in all activities /excursions enthusiastically as required
- Perform all residential duties punctually and professionally
- Be aware of your duties as per the weekly timetable
- Actively supervise mealtimes on a rota basis
- Undertake wake up duty on a rota basis
- Undertake night duty on a rota basis
- Be a role model for the students
Safeguarding
- To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons you are responsible for and come into contact with
- To adhere to the BSC Juniors safeguarding policy
Other
In addition to the above, all staff are required to:
- Work positively as part of a team
- Demonstrate a positive attitude
- Attend and participate in whole staff meetings
- Act according to accepted professional standards at all times
- Act in the welfare of the students at all times
- Comply with centre and BSC rules and regulations
*If your interview is successful, you will be asked to complete a series of tasks within a set amount of time, similar to those which you would complete on a daily and/or weekly basis, to ensure you are able to manage the workload involved in holding the position.The AM is required to attend a pre-course training weekend to meet staff from their own and other centres and to be briefed fully on all aspects of running the centre.
Essential Requirements
- DELTA / DipTESOL / MA in related field
- First Degree
- Experience of residential summer schools
- Excellent computer skills
- Ability to work well in a team
- Ability to manage a heavy workload
- Excellent communication skills
- Enthusiasm for summer school life
- Ability to remain calm under pressure
- Proven leadership skills
- Right to work in the Uk OR Malta (depending on the respective centre)
Desirable
- Experience of working with children / teenagers in a leisure context
- Experience of running testing and placement
- Experience of carrying out teacher observations and feedback
- Experience of holding meetings and writing reports
- Current valid First Aid certificate
- Child Protection training
Conditions
- Competitive Salary depending on qualifications, experience and centre size.
- All accommodation and board is provided.
- This post is offered on a residential basis. Working hours may be unsociable due to evening activities, night duty and the times of student arrivals and departures.
- BSC YL Managers adopt a smart, casual dress policy. BSC YL lanyards are to be worn at all times.
- There is at least one full day off per week. To be decided at the centre.

BSC YL is committed to safeguarding and maintaining the welfare of children. As part of our Safer Recruitment Policy:
The role requires a criminal record check. All applicants should be on the Enhanced DBS Update Service or willing to enrol on the Update Service once checks are complete. For overseas applicants ‘Certificate of Good Character’/ Police Checks will be required.
Two references (including most recent employer) will be followed up and all gaps in CVs must be explained satisfactorily.
Proof of identity and qualifications will be required at the interview stage. Only those with the right to work in the UK are eligible for any BSC YL position.
All successful candidates will need to pass 2 stages of recruitment to include a 1st Stage interview before attending a 2nd stage virtual Interview either individually or at a BSC YL Assessment Day
This role meets the requirements in respect of exempted questions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. All applicants who are offered employment will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS, PVG or Garda) before the appointment is confirmed. This will include details of cautions, reprimands or final warnings as well as convictions.
