The stated salary on the advert is also subject to a market pay supplement which would take the starting salary to £32,306 rising to £34,172 in year 3. We will also consider recruiting to EO/Band 5 level where the salary is £25,655 rising to £27,780 in year 3.

As a Biomedical Scientist EO/HEO in Microbiology, your main role is to carry out routine and specialist examination of samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate. You will assist the Senior Biomedical Scientist in the daily operation of the assigned section including the supervision of junior State Registered BMS and support staff. You will rotate through all sections of the service.

The department employs around 120 staff and has a workload in excess of 1 million specimens covering major clinical specialties including respiratory medicine, transplantation, burns, renal medicine, urology & paediatrics.

The Microbiology laboratory is fully ISO 15189 accredited and approved by the IBMS as a training centre and fully supports continuing professional development.

The panel will assess if candidates meet the requirements of the role first, using a specific benchmark system. If your application falls below the HEO grade threshold, your application may be assessed against the lower grade role. If you are interviewed for the role and you do not meet the required benchmark you may be considered for an EO grade role.

Job description

The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical bacteriology service combining traditional methodologies with laboratory automation. It has a friendly atmosphere with good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally.

The department is a designated IBMS training laboratory, has an extensive quality system in operation and is fully accredited by UKAS. We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated HCPC registered BMS with post-registration experience and understanding in clinical Microbiology.

Experience of using automated and manual molecular analysers and knowledge of the methodologies and techniques involved would be desirable. The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis in order to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.

Person specification

The department requires staff to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Microbiology service over 7 days. To achieve this it is possible that you will be required to work within a rotational shift pattern which will include shifts throughout the departments 24 hours a day / 7days per week out of hours service.

Clinical Governance

  • Participate in audit processes, drug trials, research projects, as required
  • Participate in and monitor Quality Assurance and Quality Control, activities and assist the department in maintaining CPA (Clinical Pathology Accreditation).
  • To attend regular departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication with the department

Management

  • Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables.

Education and Development

  • Gain Registration with the Health Profession Council within a time agreed with the
  • Head (or Lead) Biomedical Scientist
  • Undertake on-going training and development and update Professional Development Plan, as required by the Laboratory Manager (or Head/Lead Biomedical Scientist)

CLINICAL

  • Assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples received and liaises with senior technical staff for action or advice following departmental sample acceptance policy.
  • Ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system.
  • Perform sample preparation, processing bodily fluids and materials, including high .
  • Analysis of biological samples including more complex/ specialist investigations requiring a high level of skill risk specimens and reagent preparation following protocols.
  • Preparation and interpretation of identification tests and antimicrobial susceptibility tests.
  • Use and maintenance of manual and sophisticated automated equipment
  • Assist with the development of new methods and implementation of new technology.
  • To work in high risk Containment Level 3 laboratories following local code of practice within these facilities.
