Job Description
The Specialist Craftsperson (Mechanical) involves working a four on, four off shift pattern (days only 0600 - 1800 hours) or 37.5 hours per week covering core hours 0800 to 1600 with a rostered Saturday. Please specify in your application which shift you are applying for.
The post is site based, but you may be required to work at any Trust property and therefore are required to hold a full driving licence or be able to travel.
The role will involve routine maintenance, installation and repair work on a wide range of Mechanical engineering systems, these include steam boilers and relevant plant, ventilation plant and equipment, hot and cold water systems, RO water systems and medical gases. (Third party accredited courses and training provided.)
You will have suitable relevant maintenance experience (previous NHS experience would be an advantage) and be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation and Safe Working Practices.
You will have successfully completed a recognised Mechanical craft apprenticeship (NVQ III) or equivalent.
As well as their core specialist skill a Mechanical Craftsperson will perform work including activities which are complex and/or non-routine.
- Installs, maintains, services and repairs full range of estates services equipment
- Provides technical advice to other estates maintenance staff, contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures
- Undertakes condition surveys, evaluates inspection reports
Responsible for calibration, fault finding and repair on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment.
Example (Standby generators, 3 phase and single phase electrical circuits, Heating systems, Ventilation systems (including theatre vent), and all other associated hospital plant and equipment.

The purpose of the Specialist Mechanical craftsperson role is to manage a variety of engineering and environmental duties to carry out the repair, maintenance or installation of all plant, equipment, systems and building structure / fabric associated with all Trust properties. This will consist of Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), testing and calibration, fault finding, emergency response, defect correction and minor works. This would include hot and cold water systems, HVAC, medical gases and all plant and equipment in accordance with relevant legislative standards and operational procedures to ensure the integrity of engineering services and infrastructure of the hospital and to provide a safe environment for patients, public and staff.
