Key Purpose of Role
- The Deputy Home Manager will ensure a high standard of care service is provided for residents and will take charge of the home in the absence of the Home Manager.
- The Deputy Home Manager will be part of the home Management Team with a lead responsibility for management, support and direction of care services.
- The Deputy Home Manager will ensure that the company’s policies and procedures and all legal requirements are met.
- The Deputy Home Manager will work to ensure that all staff members contribute to the best of their ability to the efficient running of the home, and to the creation of an atmosphere conducive to the best interests of the residents. They will Interact with residents to ensure their health and social care needs are being met and resolving any issues where appropriate.
Main Responsibilities
To ensure the emotional, physical, spiritual, medical and material needs of residents are recognised, assessed and met.
- To encourage residents to make decisions in matters which affect their lives.
- To maintain and update care plans and other relevant documents and support the Clinical Staff in these actions.
- To ensure meals and snacks are of sufficient quantity and good quality and promote an “all day, all night” ethos to providing drinks and food.
- Undertaking general and personal care as appropriate, where staffing needs require you to be clinically based.
- Administering prescribed medicines and maintaining necessary records as per company policies and procedures and best practice guidelines.
- Supporting and assisting the Home Manager to ensure best practice.
- Practising maximum integrity in all dealings with residents’ affairs and avoiding abuse of the privileged relationships that exist with residents.
- To ensure a resident is always escorted on hospital visits unless this results in a safety issue for staffing levels within the home.
- To consult with the Home Manager or Responsible Person concerning any medical or social condition of residents.
- To lead teams of staff in their care of the residents in a way that promotes dignity and encourages independence.
- To assist the Home Manager in ensuring there is good communication with and between staff.
- To maintain effective communication with the Home Manager.
- As requested by and/or in the absence of the Home Manager, maintain effective communication with residents, relatives, staff members and any other relevant bodies.
- Advising the Home Manager regarding any incident/accident and the status of those concerned.
- Arranging and participating in staff and resident meetings as and when required.
- To ensure staff are able to carry out their duties effectively by ensuring breaks are taken, equipment is in place and supplies are available to maintain residents and the working environment.
Leadership
- Inspire and motivate the team and teach other staff in all aspects of the home.
- Lead by example, setting the pace and the standard.
- Praise and recognise good performance.
- Be able to challenge poor performance and report any problems to the Home Manager.
- Be pro-active in problem solving.
- Work on own initiate.
- Manage problems effectively and cascade to the Home Manager as necessary.
- Promote the company ethos of quality care delivery and strive towards recognition by awarding bodies and outside agencies.
- Ensure that all commodities used in and around the home are sensibly conserved by all staff members.
- Promote accountability of staff for their actions.
- Adhering to and implementing all policies and procedures of the company.
- In conjunction with the Home Manager, maintaining correct records as per statutory and legal requirements.
- Monitoring and controlling sickness absence in line with the company policy.
- Ensuring all staff members are aware of the company’s whistle blowing policy.
- Formal supervision and appraisal of the Team members in line with the company policy, and ongoing informal assessments of the competency and work of the night shift members to ensure consistency and high standards.
- In conjunction with the Home Manager, organising workloads and forward planning to ensure there is sufficient shift cover and dealing with any problems where necessary.
- Actively marketing the home and promoting a positive personal professional profile within the local community and ensuring the excellent reputation of the home at all times.
- Ensuring the home is attractively presented and odour free at all times in line with the company’s person-centred ethos.
- Supervising and mentoring staff members in all aspects of their work, giving assistance and guidance where necessary.
- To promote and embed effective team working and encourage staff to involve themselves in the champions scheme which operates in the home.
- Maintaining and improving professional knowledge and competence.
Health and Safety
- To advise the Home Manager of any malfunction of the heating, lighting or emergency systems and ensure the security of the home.
- To ensure fire regulations are complied with and to advise the Home Manager if there are any areas of risk.
- To ensure that all aspects of regulations regarding health and safety, basic food hygiene, infection control and environmental control are adhered to and to advise the Home Manager where action is required.
- Reporting immediately to the Home Manager any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a resident, colleague, self or another. Being responsible for infection control in the absence of the Home Manager.
- Understanding and ensuring the implementation of the home’s health and safety, infection control and hygiene policies, emergency fire procedures and all other relevant policies.
- Carrying out duties in line with regulations from the regulatory body (CQC) and the Health and Safety Act and Fire Regulations.
Reporting to the Home Manager/ Maintenance Manager any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.
- Promoting safe working practice within the home.
- Contributing to the safeguarding of adults by ensuring you are aware of your role in relation to the home’s safeguarding adults policy, taking steps to protect residents from any form of abuse or neglect and use appropriate reporting mechanisms to inform the Registered Manager of any concerns.
- Adhering to all new initiatives and any changes in local or government policies when they are implemented.
- Adhering to all appropriate regulations and the General Social Care Code of Conduct.
- Ensuring that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of work is not divulged to third parties.
- Notifying the Home Manager (or in the absence of the Home Manager, The Registered Provider/ HR Administrator) as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty, and also on your return to work from all periods of absence.
General
- Promote a positive personal/professional profile within the local community, ensuring the good reputation of the home at all times.
- Ensuring the security of the home is maintained at all times.
- Adhering to all company policies and procedures.
- Carrying out any additional tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.
