This is an exciting time to join the Museums and Galleries service as a new strategic vision is now in place and several significant capital projects are in the pipeline. Although Leicester is already full of world class art and culture, the city council is committed to growth and the vision is to create experiences that make Leicester truly special. Leicester museums draws broad range visitors from those seeking to discover stories presented within the displays and exhibitions, while some through attending weddings, conferences and events that include small intimate performances.
As a Service Assistant, you’ll be part of the team delivering excellent front of house services, activities and operations including collections and exhibitions and retail operations. We pride ourselves in presenting a welcoming and friendly face to all museum visitors, ensuring a professional, quality museum experience to all who visit the museum. We aim to promote the stories told through the museum displays and the built heritage.
You’ll be required to work at all Museum Sites across the city, according to the needs of the service.
This post is casual hours such daytime, evenings, weekends, bank holidays and occasionally throughout the night in support of business priorities.
What you’ll be doing
Your primary role will be to support museum operations by undertaking administration work, general housekeeping and cleaning tasks as well as carrying out regular gallery checks including checking displays and exhibitions. You’ll maintain a clean, safe, and secure museum environment, by conducting regular health and safety checks including fire safety, water hygiene and asbestos checks through visual observations. Interacting with visitors, you’ll provide a high-quality museum experience, which extends to weddings and venue hire bookings and retail sales in the museum shop. To attract a diverse range of new and repeat visitors, you’ll support in the planning and delivery of exciting events, activities, and exhibition launch events. Acting as an advocate for the museum, you’ll be a champion to volunteers, new staff, placements students, ensuring the museum continues to offer a learning environment.
What you’ll need
Previous experience of working with members of the public and experience of working in a busy customer reception, dealing with bookings, enquiries, complaints, etc. You’ll have an understanding and strong commitment to delivering and upholding quality customer care standards. With the ability to lift, carry furniture and equipment, you’ll be willing to undertake remedial cleaning as and when required.
