We are currently seeking a Cathedral Librarian to join our Visitor Engagement team in one of the most iconic buildings in the world, St Paul’s Cathedral.
This exciting role as a Cathedral Librarian will oversee day to day management of the library collection: access control, acquisition and disposal, cataloguing, overseeing remedial and environmental conservation, providing a reader and enquiry service, researching bibliographic displays and contributing to workshops, study days and other engagement programming.
The Cathedral Librarian is embedded within the Collections Department, led by the Head of Collections and composed of an Archivist, Collections Community Engagement Manager and Volunteers.
The department collectively manages the use and care of the cathedral historic contents and is part of the Visitor Engagement Directorate.
As part of the team, you will be responsible for and is not limited to the following duties below:
- Management of the Library, collaborating with, and working to, the Head of Collections on priorities and workload.
- Responsible for the security of the library while on duty, in collaboration with the Head of Security and wider St Paul’s staff team, including out-of-hours contact responsibilities.
- Maintenance of Library collections management policies and procedures to recognised standards.
- Managing acquisition and disposal and the maintenance of the Library’s digital catalogue.
- Managing programmes of remedial conservation of books and manuscripts and the implementation of environmental measures.
- Managing internal and external enquiries.
- Management of volunteers working on library projects.
- Working with the Development department on grant funding, and developing donation and gift policies, particularly as they relate to collections management, conservation and digitisation.
- Managing the ‘Adopt a Book’, ‘Rescue a Book’ and other collections-based donation and gifting initiatives.
We are looking for you to have:
- A postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification in Librarianship or Information Management.
- Knowledge of theology/ecclesiastical history.
- Experience of working with/handling historic collections
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Proven experience of building strong and effective working relationships internally and externally at all levels.
- Proven organisation, prioritisation and time management skills / ability to work to deadlines.
- Ability to work independently.
