The Bedford Hospital Radiology department carries out a full range of diagnostic radiological examinations for Inpatient, Outpatients and Emergency Department patients. We provide all Diagnostic modalities such as MR, CT, U/S, DEXA, Cardiac Suite, Radionuclide Imaging, General Radiography, Theatres and Portables as well as an Interventional suite.

We are looking for keen and enthusiastic Radiographers looking to expand and consolidate their experience to join our highly motivated Radiographic team at Bedford Hospital.
As a Band 5 Radiographer, you will gain significant experience in the A&E department, benefit from exposure to Theatres & Portables, and rotate through all areas of main department.
Successful applicant expected to take part in the radiographer shift system following induction period. Our service is adaptable as we offer a range of shift patterns and flexible working to suit radiographic team needs.
Working hours are 37.5 per week.

- To perform a range of X-ray procedures, producing high quality diagnostic X-ray images and providing excellent patient care.
- To take part in the radiographer shift system.
- To competently carry out a range of X-ray procedures, according to their professional training and departmental protocols, being proficient to work in all general rooms of the department.
- To work independently in the A&E, CCC, theatres, CCU and wards for all plain X-ray and Image Intensifier procedures and provide first line advice to medical and nursing staff on X-ray procedures.
- To participate in the departmental “Red Dot” system, following training making an initial assessment of the X-ray image, seeking advice from senior radiographers when necessary and alerting medical staff to image abnormalities on the X-rays.

All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering their first six months in post. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

Main responsibilities:
- To be professionally accountable for all aspects of own work including management of patients in your care.
- To plan and prioritise workload on a daily basis assessing patients on their clinical need with the resources available, seeking help where appropriate.
- To undertake assessment of patient information and patient condition, evaluate the necessity for the X-ray to make adjustment in X-ray technique to provide optimum diagnostic images, seeking help where appropriate.
- To communicate effectively and sensitively with patients ensuring they have clear understanding of procedure and have consented to the X-ray. To deal with tact and diplomacy patients who may be distressed aggressive or abusive seeking help from senior colleagues where appropriate.
- To communicate effectively both verbally, personally face to face and by phone with a wide range of clinical, technical and administrative staff across the Trust.
- To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice, maintain and develop personal portfolio
- To participate in the Trust appraisal system and maintain a personal development plan.
- To be involved in audit and clinical governance processes within the department.
- To understand personal responsibilities for Health & Safety and infection Control and adhere to Trust Health & Safety policy and infection control guidelines.
- To have an understanding of the radiation regulations1999 and the ionising radiation [medial exposure] regulation (IRMER) 2002 ensuring local rules are adhered to in all situations.
- To accurately input details on to the RIS {Radiology Information System] and interrogate the system for patient details updating and recording information as required.
- To be aware of and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies, guidelines, standard Operating Procedures and protocols.
- To participate in discussions when departmental polices, SOPs and protocols are reviewed.
- To report any anomalies found in departmental policies, SOPs and protocols to the line Manager.
