The Role

The NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a partnership between the Newcastle Hospitals Trust, the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University. As one of 20 BRCs in England the NIHR Newcastle BRC vision is to transform lives through world-leading research in ageing and multiple long-term conditions.
A key priority for the NIHR Newcastle BRC vision is developing the generation of world class researchers through the provision of training and education opportunities which support diverse career paths and promotes equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Our Research Capacity Development (RCD) strategy aims to establish the NIHR Newcastle BRC as a national centre of excellence committed to the development of a skilled interdisciplinary academic workforce focused on tackling the increasing health and societal challenges of ageing and multiple long-term conditions (A&MLTC) in the UK.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the NIHR Newcastle BRC you will be part of the BRC core team and will work closely with the BRC Academic Career Development Lead to develop and deliver a range of bespoke education, research training and mentorship opportunities at every level of the career pathway (from undergraduates to newly independent researchers), across academic disciplines (eg biomedical scientists, methodologists, and clinicians) and professional backgrounds (eg nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists, healthcare scientists, doctors, dentists).

You will support the development of structures and programmes for delivery of an ambitious programme of BRC-wide EDI activity enabling an actively inclusive research culture. As Training, Education and EDI Manager you will work across the BRC and the wider partnership to establish a diverse community of BRC early career researchers which interfaces with other RCD opportunities within the NIHR Academy, NIHR Infrastructure and wider partnership.

This is a full time post but requests for part time will be considered.

Key Accountabilities

• Support and coordinate the delivery and ongoing monitoring of the BRC Research Capacity Development and EDI Strategies, working with Academic Leads and the wider BRC team
• Provide support, guidance and facilitation to staff across the BRC to help implement education and training activities and initiatives and support the development of research capacity at all levels
• Work with the BRC EDI Academic Lead to develop the necessary structures and policies to deliver an ambitious programme of BRC-wide EDI activity
• Oversee the preparation and delivery of Training & EDI meetings and follow up agreed actions with responsible group members
• Act as the main point of contact for all NIHR-related training and EDI enquiries and build up a knowledge base of local and national training and EDI priorities
• Work with the BRC Performance Manager and Information officer to capture training activity and monitoring progress for all NIHR trainees situated in the NIHR Newcastle BRC
• As directed by the BRC Academic Career Development Lead, plan and coordinate a programme of workshops, seminars and conferences focused on training and career development
• Represent the BRC at local, regional and national meetings with NIHR and other organisations
• Review national policy/reports and requirements across areas of responsibility and work to operationalise and implement these across BRC structures
• Be a champion for Research Capacity Development across the partnership, as well as co-ordinate and respond to national / regional work
• Work with the BRC Information Officer to establish baseline EDI data to allow effective monitoring of the impact of BRC activity
• Prepare progress reports, success case studies and other performance indicators across the training and EDI remits
• Work with colleagues across the wider partnership and other NIHR infrastructure in the North-East & North Cumbria to develop synergy, joint working and shared activity that spans academic

• Analyse and evaluate BRC progress on a regular basis, formulating, presenting and implementing plans to maximise impact
• Capture and report on capacity building updates for internal governance, external stakeholders and to meet NIHR contractual requirements
• Promote the activities of the BRC at regional and national events/conferences
• Work with the BRC Communications Manager to identify opportunities to communicate training opportunities, milestones, deliverables and impact
• Support the wider delivery of the NIHR Newcastle BRC as directed by the BRC Chief Operating Officer

• Experience of working within a research, learning & development or training environment
• Knowledge and understanding of EDI legislation and good practice, as well as an ability to demonstrate how this has been applied in previous roles
• Evidence of successful project management in a complex organization
• Experience of providing professional advice to senior colleagues in a complex organisation
• Experience of engaging, consulting and working with relevant stakeholders, demonstrated by evidence of influencing and changing organisational culture, behaviour, and/or practices
• Experience of event organisation and/or workshop development
• Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, as well as the ability to engage colleagues at all levels and respond sensitively to a range of views
• Excellent IT skills including the use of Microsoft Office suite, in particular Word, Excel, and Outlook, and a high level of competency in researching information using the internet
• Excellent planning, organisation and time management skills
• Outstanding team working skills
• Proven ability to use initiative, to think strategically and to adopt an active approach to problem solving
• Experience of working to tight deadlines

• Flexible and adaptable in working with different disciplines and coping with changing and conflicting priorities; with a flexible approach to work, including a willingness to attend and assist with events held in the evening and at weekends

• Educated to degree level or equivalent

• Degree in relevant field (eg Life Sciences, or other health-related field) or equivalent qualification; associates/diploma degree in any of the above with appropriate work experience
