McLaren Advanced Projects
McLaren Advanced Projects (MAP) is a multidisciplinary engineering unit that works on many of the most ambitious technical challenges at McLaren Racing. The newly created function is designed to innovate and unlock performance across various racing series operating worldwide.
But racing is just the start. McLaren Advanced Projects also collaborates with McLaren Automotive on hypercars and supercars, and undertakes projects on a wide range of scientific and engineering projects for our partners.
Within McLaren Advanced Projects, we assemble integrated teams to work across the full development process from concept to release, drawing on 60 years of continuous development in F1 and beyond. Team members bring a wide range of skills to bear on our projects, from aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics to lightweight structures and composites, data science and advanced simulations.
The main focus of the role is to explore latest technology and develop new methods for CFD simulations which can be applied for motorsport and automotive. You will be working closely with HPC engineers in the team to extract the maximum out of hardware on site and available cloud computing. Joint development projects with software engineers are also part of the remit with the goal of streamlining workflows and automating processes.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Develop CFD methodology in close collaboration with HPC and software engineers.
- Obtain in-depth understanding of state-of-the-art tools used in Racing and develop techniques to address their limitations or improve them.
- Gain insight and context of the other factors influencing CFD methodology and performance: HPC hardware, software, novel numerical methods, correlation etc – and use this to liaise effectively with the HPC, Software and Correlation teams.
- Be able to contribute and help maintain a large codebase.
- Develop a high level of understanding of the aerodynamic performance development in motorsport. Use this to ensure alignment with the development teams in Racing.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
We are looking for someone with:
Strong mathematical background, in particular linear algebra, partial differential equations and Finite volume/element/high order numerical methods either through a PhD or MSc followed up with industrial experience.
- In-depth knowledge of CFD modelling and expertise in at least two of the following areas: CFD solver development, CFD process automation, CFD applications
-
Experience in using simulations tools/packages in industrial applications is required.
-
Knowledge and experience with OpenFOAM is preferred.
-
Strong coding skills in object-oriented programming languages (C++, python or others) as well as version control system are highly desirable.
-
Be a team player but with the initiative to make own decisions and work with minimal supervision.
-
Be a self-starter, able to identify requirements independently, then make proposals for solutions.
- Be able to work under pressure, sometimes with tight deadlines or evolving priorities.
- Be organized, with good planning skills, able to coordinate a project group to execute and deliver projects to challenging targets and within the agreed deadlines.
- Be highly driven and ready to go beyond what is expected at every opportunity.
- Be an excellent communicator to target a variety of audiences.
- Can influence and embed knowledge to other members of the team.
- Can follow CFD Methodology development directions independently.
- Possess excellent problem-solving skills and analytical approach, with attention to detail.
- Have the aptitude to learn from others and share knowledge with others.
- Take a flexible approach to working hours and occasional remote support.
- Recognises the place of the new division in the wider context of the team and how this group contributes to the success of McLaren Racing.
- Flexible approach to working hours and occasional travel.
We strive to provide a fun, innovative, collaborative and open culture where everyone’s input is welcome, and everyone feels part of our achievements. We work hard to create a culture of continuous improvement and support with a proactive approach to management and personal development.
