Junior Multi-skilled Engineer - Job Description
Nanoco, founded in 2001, is a world leader in the development and production of cadmium-free quantum dots and other nanomaterials for use in multiple applications.
We have an exciting opportunity to join and continue to develop your skills, experience and career within our small dynamic and innovative Engineering team ensuring all our equipment and machinery run efficiently. As well as general maintenance and repairs, we are always looking at ways we can improve and develop how we work, as well the safety and reliability of our processes.
Reporting to: Process Engineering Team Leader
Salary: £24,000 - £25,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Hours of work: Full-time, 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, with occasional weekend working. Flexibility with working hours is required as the Site may operate varied shift work patterns as demand requires
Place of work: The Heath Business & Technical Park, Runcorn, Cheshire, WA7 4QX, with flexibility to work at other locations as the business may reasonably require
Summary of role:
Responsible for supporting our scientists and engineers by helping to provide safe, smooth running, and reliable equipment. You will be responsible for maintenance and calibration of all laboratory and production equipment. You will provide a preventive maintenance service and assist in the engineering of unique solutions where upgrades or new equipment implementation is required to support processes. You will be expected to communicate internally and with suppliers to ensure equipment and chemicals are available for use as required.
Close working relationships with: All R&D, Process, Production, engineering and technician teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Maintenance/Troubleshooting
- Carrying out maintenance and calibration of equipment, including pumps, drives, heating and cooling units.
- Managing maintenance rotas and records on Q Pulse
- Managing preventative maintenance schedule
- Assisting with the delivery of the compliance plan under ISO90001
- Troubleshooting issues with laboratory & production equipment as required to assist Chemists
- Assisting with implementation of any upgrades/new equipment as planned by Process Engineering team
- PAT testing of all Nanoco equipment
- Facilities Management, General workshop housekeeping and cleaning
- Liaising with the landlord and external contractors to ensure facilities operate smoothly, safely and are compliant with current guidelines
- Ensure workshop and storage areas are kept clean, and tidy
- Ensure machine tools are free of swarf and tools are retained to storage following use.
- Stock keeping
- Monitoring/maintaining production and workshop equipment consumables and spares supplies
- Reorder stock items that have reached minimum stock levels
- Taking deliveries and book in deliveries into Sage
- Hand out deliveries and arrange for returns when necessary
- Contractors
- Dealing with contractors on site
- Issuing permit to work
- Collating Method statements and risk assessments
- Keep paperwork and logs on file
- Machine shop and Electronics workshop duties
- Maintenance and servicing of workshop equipment, including lathes, mills, saws and drills.
- Assist in the fabrication workshop on various jobs such as turning, milling and basic fabrication
- Assist in the electronics workshop on lighting, display projects and assist in the repairs of equipment company wide
Requirements of role
1. A proactive attitude to troubleshooting issues with equipment and finding working solutions.
2. Proven mechanical/electrical maintenance skills
3. A-level or HNC/HND qualifications in chemistry or relevant science subject
4. Excellent communication skills including IT literacy
5. Ability to plan ahead and prioritise and address forthcoming issues
6. Good IT skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint are needed and a knowledge of CAD/CAM packages is an advantage.
KPI’s
1. Safe and effective setup of equipment.
2. Maintenance and testing of equipment performed in accordance with the maintenance schedule.
3. Equipment repair log kept up to date.
4. Ensure broken equipment, and equipment requiring modification, is assessed and necessary actions taken in a timely manner. (e.g. fixed on site with assistance from Process engineering team; sent to workshops or the manufacturer )
5. Effectively communicate and feedback information to Process Engineering Leader and production leadership team.
6. Never run out of stock and majority of deliveries are on standing order
7. Workshop, stores and other work areas is a safe and clean environment at all times
8. Equipment is calibrated and ready to use, downtimes are kept to a minimum
