The school values Restorative and empathetic practices, empathy drives connection, this is a key aspect that vulnerable children who have been through significant trauma will really respond to, this is one aspect of connection that are looking for, not pity and sympathy.
If you have genuine aspirations within Forensics, seeing the social elements at play in a school like this is key – understanding where these boys and girls come from, the traumas they have been through and how they have ended up in the provision, in front of you at that very moment.
This role will give you a very good grounding, just at the very start of your desired career in Forensics. These roles are very challenging, that is exactly the point, you need to see and hear things that will potentially upset you,. As sad as it is, it’s being pragmatic and being able to learn in these experiences, qualifying and disqualifying elements of this role, the sector as a whole.
2 key questions to always remind yourself of when taking on this LSA role when you are working with your students:
Can you make the student’s life just that little bit better today and keep them safe?
Can you demonstrate the value of an education to the students?
These are 2 of the key aspects of this role, you must be sincere and understand this role and roles similar, are very challenging. This LSA role is not easy, each boy has a different context for their mental health and trauma, their own idiosyncrasies that will be different from their classmates. Their behaviour will likely be unpredictable and will often be dictated by the adults and environments they are exposed to, outside of school.
That is why it is vital that you can QUALIFY and even more importantly, DISQUALIFY the SEN and Mental Health sectors for yourself.
This SEMH LSA role is based within an Alternative Provision for children who have an EHCP for their Social, Emotional and Mental Health challenges, some of the children will regularly display anti-social behaviour towards staff and their fellow children.
Key aim - Delivering Key and Personal skills to students who will be in varying degrees of engagement, you are looking to raise their academic attainment through the delivery of key & personal skills – through a restorative approach. Academically, the boys will not make any progress until they feel as safe and secure with you, which can take days, weeks and even months, dependent on the boy(s). Many of the boys will have already been tragically let down by the adults by the adult world and have trust issues, hence the empathetic, restorative approach deployed in school.
Emotional and Academic attainment - You will cover a range of core academic subjects, sport, computing, cultural interests and core key and personal skills. We are looking to install confidence and give the boys pragmatic objectives, developing their self-esteem and independence, wherever possible.
Next Steps - If you are successful in being shortlisted for this role, you will receive a telephone call and email contact from GSL within 24-36 hours, we will go from there!
