It's our Group Public Affairs (GPA) team that plays the central role in working with policy-makers to explain our point of view and to achieve a more conducive business environment – one in which we can strive to be the best financial services provider for our customers.

In joining our team, you'll contribute to our work with government, parliament, civil servants, devolved authorities and other external partners. You'll work collaboratively with teams across our Group to generate ideas for political engagement on topics of importance to our customers and our businesses. You’ll help our policy and campaigns senior managers to design and implement effective engagement strategies to influence policy-makers on our policy advocacy priorities with the aim of securing lasting change. You'll be speaking directly to our audiences on these issues, as well as harnessing the expertise of our specialists across the organisation.
The GPA team seeks to be agile and the role holder will be expected to fulfil a wide range of responsibilities and tasks which include, but are not limited to:

Collaborating with internal experts and GPA colleagues to develop and coordinate a political engagement plan – including a tailored Westminster engagement strategy – aligned to the team’s priorities.

Devising effective advocacy campaign strategies and identifying opportunities to influence the direction of public policy.

Representing the Group and its policy stance in various external forums including with policy-makers (within or outside of Westminster), other industry representatives and opinion formers.

Working closely with the campaigns senior manager to identify, assess and deliver opportunities for political visits that highlight common agendas as well as partnership opportunities with think tanks, which help to bolster LBG’s policy positions.

Developing a post General Election engagement plan for newly elected MPs.

Leading on the Group’s political engagement strategy for critical business decisions and strategic announcements e.g. branch closures.

Identifying opportunities to showcase the Group’s activity on a range of pertinent issues including the work of our Foundations, financial resilience and inclusion and our diversity agenda.

Take ownership of specific themes or topics of pertinence to the Group’s political engagement agenda at any given time.

Working with the relevant business teams to interrogate and respond to enquiries from elected representatives, ensuring they are handled with appropriate sensitivity and diligence. Providing political counsel to senior leaders and writing informative and concise political briefings to support relevant engagement activity.
What skills, capabilities and experience you will need to bring to the role

A natural curiosity about politics and the UK’s socio-economic challenges.

A passion for political engagement and securing lasting relationships that help to build reputational capital.

Strong understanding of the political landscape, especially relating to housing, financial resilience, businesses or sustainability issues.

A proven ability to communicate confidently with high profile external stakeholders and to deliver counsel to senior leaders in compelling and authoritative ways.

Energy and enthusiasm to enhance the reputation and interests of the Group.

A willingness to work flexibly in a fast-paced environment in order to meet urgent requests from both internal and external partners.

A commitment to fostering diverse, inclusive and high-performance teams.

Excellent organisational skills.
This role will require frequent visits to, and face to face engagement with policy-makers in, Westminster and Whitehall. As such, applicants who are London-based or have easy access to London are preferable.
