Our client, a leading healthcare publisher, requires a new Publisher to support the management and development of the journal portfolio and editorial team.
You will bring to this role your excellent communication skills, commercial acumen, Open Access expertise and track record of people management to support the growth and development of the portfolio.
Reporting to the Managing Director this is a brilliant opportunity for an experienced publisher or senior commissioning editor looking for their next step in their publishing career.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop external relationships/solutions with societies, libraries, funders and institutions to drive a strong pipeline of content for the portfolio.
- Ensure efficient day-to-day running of the journal’s portfolio. This will also include the direct management of between 1-3 journals.
- Hold regular calls with the Editorial Team to have oversight on the journal article commissioning cycle.
- Plan and implement commissioning strategies to solicit citable journal contributions ensuring a consistent flow of content
- Manage pipeline to achieve journal and portfolio-specific objectives regarding journal growth, turnaround times, visibility, and readership
- Work with Accounts Payable to monitor the APC payment schedule to ensure payments are being invoiced and received according to schedule.
- Work with the Review Editor to ensure timely peer review is in place for all submissions.
- Work with the production department to support content delivery including checking proofs and content for accuracy, style and correctness.
- Support the editorial assistant with handling permissions and queries as necessary
- To regularly monitor key journal statistics and readership trends to help drive journal development and
- Engage with the Marketing Team to plan and produce attractive copy for marketing materials such as newsletters, press releases, social media posts etc.
- Recruit, on-board and provide continued coaching support to Managing Editors and Assistants.
Skills & Experience:
- Strong, demonstrable experience of successful journal management and commissioning, ideally in a publisher or senior managing editor role and preferably in STM.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably from the life sciences, biology or health.
- Strong understanding of the Open Access publishing landscape, journal publication and production processes.
- Strong ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrable track record of people management and history of achieving targets
- Strong reporting and excellent presentation skills
- Excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work effectively and deal with competing priorities.
- Excellent grasp of written and spoken English, spelling and grammar.
- A sharp eye and excellent attention to detail.
