Invites applications for the full-time post of Practice Nurse to join our friendly GP practice serving 8500 plus patients across two sites. We are a seven-doctor practice with excellent nursing and admin teams.
We are looking for a Practice Nurse to provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years post registration experience in an acute setting and an interest in respiratory and diabetes. Practice nurse experience preferred but training available for the right candidate.
Hours: 37 per week.

The following are the core responsibilities of the Primary Care Nurse role.
Practice Nurse duties will be allocated as part of the Practice Nurse Rota during the operating hours of 07:15hrs – 20:00hrs Monday – Friday, with some Saturday cover 09:00hrs – 17:00hrs
In order to comply with future Extended Hours Practice Nurse cover may apply to weekends and Bank Holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Assist GPs to help deliver effective implementation of management of patients with chronic diseases as detailed by the Quality Outcomes Framework.
b. Support the implementation of evidence-based guidelines in conjunction with the practice nursing team.
c. Encourage the development of integrated services within primary Care to include integrated practice-based teams and multidisciplinary working.
d. Promote your own continuing professional development
e. Participate in annual appraisal
f. Provide nursing treatments to patients in participation with general practitioners using agreed protocols
g. To provide, assessment, screening treatment services and health education advice
h. To provide general and specific health screening to the practice patients (within the agreed protocols) with referral to the general practitioner as necessary
i. Be competent and confident in managing people with long term health conditions
j. Be competent in the administration of childhood immunisations and travel vaccination, participating in the vaccination and immunisation programmes for both adults and children whilst ensuring safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
k. Work with patients in order to support compliance with, and adhere to, prescribed treatments
l. Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care
m. Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment
n. Recognise and work within own competence and professional code of conduct as regulated by the NMC
o. Produce accurate, contemporaneous, and complete records of patient consultation, consistent with legislation policies and procedures
p. Prioritise, organise, and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality
q. Maintain and control injectable and oral drug stocks in the treatment room and doctor surgeries
r. Perform venepuncture and electrocardiography
s. Undertake opportunistic screening when required
t. Undertake wound care/ management dressing techniques
u. Carry our ear examination and referral
v. Perform cervical screening and promote breast awareness
w. Provide advice on lifestyle issues, assist and support patients in changing their unhealthy behaviours and refer appropriately
x. Recognise the signs of child abuse, addictive behaviours, suicidal tendencies and be aware of local referral procedures.
y. Apply infection control measures when collecting and handling laboratory specimens. Disposing of waste materials, dealing with blood and body fluids spillages and report and treat sharps injuries
z. Undertake first aid and management of emergencies i.e., burns, haemorrhage, hypo/hyperglycaemic emergencies/ asthma attacks.
aa. Undertake annual training and demonstrate competency in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.
Secondary Responsibilities
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Practice Nurse may be requested to:
a. Partake in audit as directed by the audit lead
b. Apply practice policies, standards, and guidance
c. Take part in annual appraisal process
