The continued growth of our Mission Systems Business Area (BA) offers an exciting opportunity for Mechanical Engineers to join this part of the Integrated Sensing and Protection (ISP) Line of Business, Leonardo Electronics UK.
We are seeking high calibre Mechanical Engineers, with an understanding in all aspects of the Engineering Lifecycle.
Within this BA, the projects are predominantly new, diverse and exciting recently awarded contracts. Integrating world-class products from both the Leonardo portfolio of products and from selected partners, these new opportunities integrate into systems operating at the forefront of UK capability.
The Mission Systems BA forecasts continued growth over the next 5 years as part of the Integrated Business Plan. As such, there is a requirement to further develop the high performance culture to realise the growth potential that exists.
Based at our facility in Essex, this role includes the opportunity to fully utilise Leonardo’s ‘Custom (hybrid) Working’, which empowers the Mechanical Engineer to work wherever best suits the individuals and BA’s needs, with a focus on delivering excellence.
The work of the Mission Systems BA is deployed across various platforms (including dismounted (soldier), military vehicles and fixed static–all of which deployed throughout the World. Leonardo are a World leading systems design and integrator, focused on finding the best solution for our Customers.

Support/Lead members of staff in the delivery of technical solutions on critical business programmes to ensuring mechanical engineering excellence.

Generation of mechanical solutions for harsh environments (Shock, Vibration, EMC, RADHAZ, salt fog, etc)
-
Design of engineering solutions taking into account all requirements including product quality, safety, reliability, testability, sustainability, etc.

Mechanical engineering detailed design, including numerical calculations, tolerance studies, etc.
-
Produce Manufacturing Data Packs in line with BS8888 including appropriate application of GD&T.

Provide support to technical problem investigations and deliver effective solutions.

Approval of sub-contractor solutions, included test and validation plans.
-
Generation of Platform Integration Plan(s).

Support/Manage and deliver Mechanical Requirement Specification.

Hands on involvement in practical implementation of development builds.

Contribute to reviews of Mechanical designs in accordance with business and industry standards.

Support Procurement and Manufacturing during the introduction of new product into the Development/Production lifecycle phase.

Support/Own Work Package delivery elements to achieve desired Quality, Schedule and Cost.

Build effective cross-functional relationships within local site, across business.

Essential:
Qualifications/Experience:
-
A minimum of an upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or
-
Equivalent experience in the field of Defence and/or naval environments.
Experience in: -
Mechanical engineering for Electronic products (including RF).
-
Solutions involving sheet metal and tube (bend and weld) fabrication.
-
Mechanical design and development using 3D CAD tools (ideally PTC Creo).
-
Problem solving using a structured, logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective manner.
-
Understanding Structural and Thermal Analyses data, to inform design decisions.
-
Experienced in various aspects of DfX, including Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, Integration and Sustainability.
-
Operating in a high performing multi-disciplinary Team.
Desirable:
-
MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
-
Integration of equipment onto Military vehicles and Command posts, including 19” rack cabinets, cable management, etc.
-
Experience using AutoDesk Inventor.
-
Capable of producing ‘first pass’ (structural and thermal) analyses to determine if a design is fit-for-purpose i.e. using PTC Simulate, flow or similar.

Experience using visualisation software i.e. Visionary Render, PTC Mock-up, etc.
-
Mechanical Engineering industry trends - knowledge of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
