Job Description

CLINICAL FELLOW (ST1-2 LEVEL) IN UROLOGY

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow (ST1-2 level) in Urology with on-call cover. This post is for a period of 6-12 months in the first instance, with a view to extend and will commence ASAP. It is an ideal opportunity to expand on surgical experience in Urology and General Surgery, especially with the expansion of the Lewisham surgical Hub in 2023.

The successful post holder will have an opportunity to widen their clinical and surgical experience in core surgical disciplines and have access to our training resources, participate in out-of-hours rota and contribute to our attractive audit programme and have the opportunity to develop teaching and training for our King’s College Medical Students.

The Urology post will support both the emergency and elective urology patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University Lewisham Hospital respectively.

If you are interested in applying for this post please contact Mr Ramon Niekrash – Lead Consultant Urologist at Lewisham & Greenwich: [email protected] (secretary Sophie Juby 0208 8836 5435) and Chelsey Hopkins, Associate Service Manager 07867 140228.

To fulfil duties of a Junior Clinical Fellow, He/she will be involved in ‘on take’ duties for the Directorate with a urology registrar on site and will participate with ongoing care of the consultant’s inpatients.

The weekly timetable will include daily cover for urology emergency (and general surgery when on call), daily ward round, 2 theatre sessions (including day surgery) and 2 outpatients, flexible cystoscopy clinic and audit and research is encouraged.

This post has in the past helpful to candidates for ST3 posts to gain experience.

The current on call rota comprises normal working days of 08.00 to 17.00 Monday to Friday and shifts of 08.00 to 21.00 (08.30 to 21.30 on Saturdays and Sundays – current compensatory rest guidance) and 21.00 to 08.00 to provide out of hours cover. The night shifts are arranged in a “week of nights” pattern. Out of hours on call is shared between General Surgery and Urology juniors.

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is a community focused provider of local and acute care, providing high quality services to over one million people living across the London boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley. With a turnover of around £700 million, we provide services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, University Hospital Lewisham and a range of community settings in Lewisham. We also provide some services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.

As an organisation, we’ve made significant improvements for patients and staff in the last two and-a-half years. This is reflected in our most recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection (from February 2020), which found improvements across the organisation and gave us an improved rating of “Good” in the Well-Led and Effective domains, in addition to the rating of “Good” that we had already achieved in the Caring domain. Our staff culture change programme has been key to the Trust’s improvement journey, as we’ve stabilised our workforce by reducing vacancy rates and improving staff retention. We’ve also significantly increased the representation of minority ethnic leaders across our clinical and corporate teams.

The Urology department at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will support our very busy Urology department to cover urology work at Queen Elizabeth as well as cover general surgery on calls on the QEH site.

The post holder will be involved in ‘on take’ duties for the department with a Urology Registrar on site and will participate with ongoing care of the consultant’s inpatients. The weekly timetable will include daily cover for urology emergency, daily ward round, 2 theatre sessions (including day surgery) and 2 outpatients, and flexible cystoscopy clinics. Audit and research is encouraged.

The Urology post will support both the emergency and elective urology patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and University Lewisham Hospital respectively.
