This is an exciting time to join the team as we develop our Azure hosted services, working with our Partners who are committed to provide supplementary functional and platform support while we build our team, developing in-house capabilities to provide outstanding infrastructure for SAP Platform Services.

Job description

As an Infrastructure Engineer you will handle and support the infrastructure services that underpin all internal user services and to the public.

Reporting directly to the Lead Infrastructure Engineer, responsible for supporting service management, assuring the platform performance runs the Azure infrastructure to time, cost, and quality measures.

We have a strong team ethos of continual self-improvement where knowledge and experience are openly shared, so active contribution to the team and supporting its ongoing development is a crucial part of the role.

The role is based in Worthing however, some travel and overnight stays may be required and occasional out of hours may be vital in the event of an incident.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for an enthusiastic, resilient individual who can deliver in a meaningful, changing, and fast paced environment with shifting priorities.

You will already have an Infrastructure background with technical understanding of infrastructure (i.e., virtual machines, datacentres and environments, Oracle Enterprise Linux).

You will be familiar with the technology and its patterns and have good understanding and experience of Azure and Linux operating systems.

Person specification

Provide direct support in the active management of all aspects of interim and strategic capacity planning whilst safeguarding SAP services.

Coach and mentor junior team members.

Overseeing preparations and support of IT operations solutions and services - physical or virtual - according to industry and organisational best practices, standards, service requirements and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) throughout the product life cycle.

Assist in the provision of outstanding services and consistent levels of capability, as the need arises by the organisation.

Building and maintaining relationships across SAP Practice with customers and suppliers to ensure high-quality, cost-effective provision of service that align to and support business needs.

Work with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.

Provide specialist technical support and assistance to projects, ensuring delivery of non-functional requirements and continual service improvement.

Handle financials of the infrastructure and analyse cost savings in the Azure platform.

Provide a long-term view of the platform and drive capability uplifts.

Manage disaster recovery rehearsal and planning.

Deputise for the Lead Infrastructure and lead the team when necessary.

Essential Criteria

Service Focus. Maintaining full focus on the whole life of service delivery (designing, developing, delivering and operating). Ensuring that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service. You can lead the investigation and resolution of incidents.

Continual service improvement. Enthusiastic about identifying and exploring opportunities for service and business improvement. You can produce analysis and identify, prioritise, and implement improvements and efficiencies, ensuring that the organisation derives maximum value from services. You can recognise the potential for automation of processes, resolve costs and benefits of innovative approaches, and handle change or assist implementation where needed. You can apply critical thinking to deliver the best service for the end user.

Availability and capacity management. You can define, analyse, plan, forecast, measure, maintain and improve all aspects of the availability of services, including power. You can control and manage service availability to meet business needs cost-effectively, including managing the capability, functionality, and sustainability of Service components (such as hardware, software, network resources, and software or infrastructure as a service).

Ownership and initiative. Taking ownership of problems and proactively resolve technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements. You can take full ac-countability for the actions taken and decisions made.

Technical understanding. Demonstrate knowledge of the specific technologies vital to fulfil the responsibilities and tasks of this opportunity. Applying the required breadth and depth of technical knowledge including Microsoft Azure public cloud and Linux OS.

Team members that are moving offices as a result of the Locations Programme will be entitled to a Moves Adjustment Payment for three years where they incur additional costs. This is calculated based on the difference between the costs of travelling to and from the new and old office, over a weekly period. As part of the application process, you will be asked to complete a CV detailing your employment history of your most recent and relevant experience matching the "person specification" with no more than 250 words per role and a 750-word personal statement matching the Essential Criteria with examples and impact where relevant.

We want to see how you went about completing your tasks and the changes/impacts you made in your experience. We recommend using the STAR Method for this section to outline the Situation, Task, Action and Result.

  • Your CV is all about summarising your skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Your Personal Statement should be used to describe how your skills and experience meet the essential criteria mentioned, providing evidence. Your evidence needs to be specific, provide the impact you made, results achieved, and show us you have the experience, approach, and skills we’re looking for.

Your personal statement and CV should explain what you will bring to the role while being aligned to the essential criteria primarily.

During the panel interview, your experience will be assessed to explore in detail what you are capable of.

Interviews will take place via video link.

Where candidates perform well in the selection process, but fall short of the required standard for SO, we may offer opportunities at a lower grade - HO. If this applies, you will be given more detail about potential roles at the lower grade after all vacancies for this campaign have been filled.

HM Revenue and Customs is currently going through an exciting ten-year transformation programme to create a tax authority fit for the future. As part of this, we are committed to providing high-quality jobs and giving employees a great place to work, whichever location you work from.

HM Revenue and Customs has made significant progress with its plans to locate in 14 large, modern, flexible offices, equipped with high-speed digital infrastructure supporting improved customer service and compliance activity. These collaborative workspaces will enable smarter working and great training and development facilities, allowing for the sharing of expertise, local training, promotion, and provide great ongoing career development opportunities.

These offices will be located in central locations in the following towns and cities close to accessible transport links: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Croydon, Portsmouth and Stratford.

Terms and Conditions

We really hope you decide to apply for this role. If you’re successful you need to know that in February 2021 members of recognised trade unions (ARC and PCS) voted to approve a pay and contract reform offer. This means that HMRC will adopt new terms and conditions for all colleagues as part of a multi-year pay deal and contract offer, the pay deal period is 01 June 2020 – 31st May 2023 and terms and conditions changes take place from the 01 June 2021 onwards.
