Role Type: Full time

Work for the world you want to live in.

Wouldn’t you want to live in a world where people, populations and the planet thrive? Where technology protects rather than threatens. Where societies feel safe and secure. Where cities and continents feel part of one global community.

We’re an international aerospace, defence and security company, with sites all-round the UK, that do loads of exciting and important things to make the world safer and more secure. We defend nations, save lives and protect communities around the globe.

Devonport:
The Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.

Working at Devonport puts the best of the South West at your fingertips. Amazing scenery, vibrant towns and numerous leisure opportunities - It’s why Devon and Cornwall are such desirable places to live and work.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

For more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence Company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services. We help customers in the UK and around the world to improve the capability, reliability and availability of their most critical assets within the four market sectors of Marine, Land, Aviation, and Nuclear, underpinned by a deep understanding of technology integration, unique infrastructure and specialist training.

Trainee Health Physics Monitor role:

To be part of a team that provides continuous (i.e. 24/7, 365 day) radiological protection practitioner control, oversight and direction on the radiological safety aspects of work being undertaken within radiological designated areas on-board nuclear powered submarines and within associated support facilities.

To be immediately available to provide practical radiological protection knowledge, advice and support to the Site Emergency arrangements (DRDL and MoD) and other nominated contingency arrangements.

Ensure compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, Radioactive Substances Regulations and other statutory legislation.

1. Use specialist radiological protection instruments to monitor:
  • Surface and airborne contamination using hand-held contamination rate-meters, installed and portable air samplers
  • Radiation dose rates using hand-held, installed and portable radiation detectors
  • Individuals for personal contamination and respond accordingly.

2. The Health Physics Monitor will respond to each of the above situations by measurement, calculation and assessment of the radiological significance to enable the appropriate advice to be given to minimise radiation exposure to people to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). This is achieved through the ability to perform numerical calculations quickly, accurately and reliably to evaluate the significance of the radiological data produced.

3. Carry out functional tests of radiation protection monitoring instrumentation using calibrated radioactive sealed sources.

4. Respond appropriately to changes in radiological conditions using the ALARP principles.

5. Record radiation protection monitoring and survey results – in a variety of formats (e.g., written logs, information technology);

6. Undertake radiation – related work activities safely and competently.

7. Participate in emergency response to provide radiological contingency arrangements to protect personnel, plant and the environment.

8. Communicate radiological protection monitoring information effectively using a variety of appropriate communication methods to interact with others to give

and receive information accurately in a timely, positive, challenging and professional manner.

Job Characteristics:

1. This will be a shift working role, as and when required by business need. Reasonable notice will be given for change of shift working arrangements.

2. Work within Radiological Controlled Areas.

3. Work on board vessels. This will require routine access into compartments using vertical ladders and potentially spending time in confined spaces.

4. Work at short notice and outside of standard working hours.

5. Full UK driving licence holder

Qualifications you’ll gain:
On completion of your training programme and End Point Assessment, you will gain a nationally recognised apprenticeship certificate as a Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor.

This is a trainee role, and a training and development programme will be delivered to enable the successful candidate/s to acquire the required knowledge, skills, experience and competencies.

Due to the nature of the training requirement during the first 14 months of employment, predefined leave periods are established. Adaptation to leave periods may be granted where practicable/justified.

What you’ll need:
A minimum of 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4/C or above, including maths and English.

Previous working experience within the nuclear industry, particularly in radiological controlled areas would be an advantage.

Demonstrable Competencies will include the following:

  • Commitment to safety
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to make decisions, be assertive and respond accordingly to pre-set action levels.
  • Ability to take responsibility for completing tasks and procedures.
