The University of Bath is one of the country’s leading Universities. We have been named the Times and Sunday Times University of the Year 2023, and we are consistently named as one of the best universities and research institutions in the world. We’re investing heavily in our people and facilities and in our relationships with our local community and key partners to deliver world-class teaching and research.

We are looking for a new member of our team to lead on developing and delivering health and safety services, and in particular health and safety training, to support the University in this endeavour.

About you:

You will enjoy supporting others to improve health and safety performance. You do not need to have worked in Higher Education before but experience of working in a complex organisation is essential. You will work with colleagues from across the University to identify and deliver health and safety training and development needs. You will have a particular role in providing advice and guidance to our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Management, and some professional Services departments. You will have a proven record of:

  • Advising and supporting a range of stakeholders, including at senior leadership level.
  • Identifying and developing risk-based solutions that are both proportionate and appropriate to the risks identified.
  • Negotiating, influencing, and coaching to achieve desired safety outcomes
  • Identifying training needs and commissioning and/or developing and delivering training solutions. This will include experience of working with a variety of audiences across a range of core health and safety subjects.

About us:

We are a small, agile team that sits within the wider HR department. We provide a key service to the University in shaping and driving its health, safety and wellbeing culture and ensuring that these activities support the University’s wider strategy and ambitions. We strive to achieve this through robust strategies and policies, strong leadership, sound governance, excellent professional advice, targeted coaching and training and reliable performance monitoring and measurement.

As a Team, we take pride in being friendly, approachable, and professional, taking a pragmatic view of risk to support and facilitate the work the University does. A key aim is to engage and encourage ownership of risk and to share best practice across the University.

Further information:

This is a new role, and it is going to be pivotal to our efforts to embed and improve core health and safety competences across the organisation. You will work closely with incredible people from all corners of our organisation.

For an informal discussion about the role and what it would offer you and your future career development please contact Chris Young, HR Deputy Director: Safety and Employee Wellbeing Services ([email protected]), however, please submit your application via the University website.

What we can offer you:

We are an equal opportunities employer and have an excellent international reputation with staff from over 60 different nations. We have made a positive commitment towards gender equality and intersectionality receiving a Silver Athena SWAN award.

A family-friendly University with an increasingly agile workforce, we are open to flexible working arrangements. We’re also proud to be a disability confident leader and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments you may require.

We offer:

  • a very generous employer contributory pension scheme;
  • generous annual leave allowance with an additional 5 discretionary days so that you can enjoy a positive work life balance;
  • an excellent reward package that recognises the talents of our diverse workforce;
  • a wide range of personal and professional development opportunities.
  • a number of support options available for new and existing staff to help with the cost of some immigration expenses which you may be eligible for. Please visit the following webpages for more information:
    • Relocation Procedure
    • Visa Reimbursement Scheme
    • Interest-Free Loan Scheme

Our campus is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the City of Bath with its historic charm and social activity only a short distance away creates an excellent environment in which to work.
