Research Assistant in Brachycephalic Dog Health and Welfare - Part time

We invite applications for the role of Research Assistant in Brachycephalic Dog Health and Welfare in the Department of Clinical Science and Services (CSS). This is an exciting new position that will appeal to veterinary surgeons with an interest in both clinical research and social science (e.g., survey based) methods. The position is offered as an initial 18-month, part-time (28 hours) fixed term contract, with the potential for extension dependent on additional funding, which cannot yet be guaranteed but will be sought.

The research project will involve investigating the health and welfare of brachycephalic crossbreeds in the UK, and exploring public perceptions of their desirability, health and the ethics of outcrossing. This work is joint funded by the BVA’s Animal Welfare Foundation, RSPCA and Blue Cross. Data will be collected and statistically analysed both from physical examinations of dogs and through surveys.

We are looking for candidates with a UK-registrable degree in veterinary medicine, and ideally experience of working in UK small animal practice. Experience in collecting, analysing, and reporting on scientific data is also highly desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and organisational abilities will be key for this role, and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team. Candidates must have an existing right to work within the UK, and are required to have a full clean driving license and access to a vehicle during the project due to the off-site nature of data collection (flexible remote working will be possible for duties outside of data collection).

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Rowena Packer (Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science, Department of Clinical Science and Services) via email: [email protected].
