Our organisational strategy is aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and our globally recognised researchers advise governments, industry and international bodies. We’re ranked fourth in the world and first in the UK for promoting gender equality, in the top 70 universities globally for social impact, and first in Scotland for health and wellbeing, and reduced inequalities, for which we are also ranked 21st in the world (THE Impact Rankings, 2022). In 2020-21, we contributed £1.7 billion and more than 14,000 jobs across the globe (BIGGAR Economics, 2022).

GCU is committed to widening participation, and delivering positive outcomes for our students. We are Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships. With campuses in Glasgow, London and New York, we have transnational partnerships around the world, supporting more than 22,000 students from 130 countries. Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence - we transform the lives of the people and communities we serve.

The Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) in the School of Health & Life Sciences has an international reputation for delivering high impact research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2021) 91% of GCU’s health related research has been formally classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. More over, the impact of GCU’s applied health research was classified as ‘outstanding’ and surpassed by only one other UK institution. The University's outstanding record for delivering impact for the common good against the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals was also highlighted in the recent THE Global Impact Rankings with GCU 1st in Scotland for SDG3, good health and wellbeing.

The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to understanding cell, molecular and systems biology and clinical diagnosis of disease and treatments, and advancing this knowledge through research and teaching. As part of the Research Centre for Health, we have an active and diverse portfolio of research activities that aim to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying a number of long term conditions, to aid public health and develop novel therapies for treatment of these and associated conditions.

The role will involve the screening of a large drug repurposing library to identify novel antimicrobial compounds with activity against bacterial vaginosis associated pathogens. The project will involve traditional and anaerobic microbial and cell culture techniques as well as sophisticated bioinformatics analysis using RNA-sequencing.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic individual to deliver an externally funded research post working within the Public Health and Infections research group. The role is 5 days per week (1.0FTE) for a period of eighteen months. The successful candidate will hold a PhD qualification or be near completion in a relevant subject area. The individual should have extensive background experience working within a research laboratory, with previous knowledge and experience working and manipulating microbial biofilms desirable. The job role will require outputs and objectives to be delivered in timely and efficient manner and requires previous experience of both oral and written scientific communication.
