Job Description

Closing Date: 02/07/2023 Hours: 21 per week Salary: £12,166.41 per annum i.e. £20,856.71 pro rata per annum

About this role

While a passion for animals is expected, the ideal candidate should be just as happy working with people as part of the technician team but also assisting the wider Animal Care and Equine department with the delivery of outstanding educational experiences for our learners. You could be assisting in lessons or supervising groups on work placement so communication and supervision skills are key.
The role is strenuous and requires working for long periods in extremes of weather so it is essential that you are physically fit. The role is part time over three days and you will be required to work weekends and public holidays on a rota basis. A full, clean UK driving licence is essential and willingness to undertake first aid and minibus training would be expected.

Purpose and Duties

Purpose

To facilitate the learning process by supporting staff and students in an effective learning environment

Duties

  • To provide direct support to teaching staff by maintaining and promoting lively working environment and practices.
  • To work with and ensure that staff and students have access to animal rooms, workshops, equipment as required.
  • To prepare and assist in activities ensuring all materials and equipment are prepared in readiness for practical sessions and retrieved after the activity has ceased.
  • To maintain and repair specialist animal enclosures and be responsible for the security of enclosures and tools.
  • To assist with the supervision of students working on project work.
  • Be flexible in supporting the sections requirements and cross college tasks
  • To oversee the Animal Care Apprentices whilst working on site and designate the workload
  • Be responsible for ordering requisitions and storekeeping
  • To follow the current Life Sciences Animal Standard Operating Procedures
  • To be responsible for the day to day care of all the animals within the Centre for Life Sciences.
  • Review and develop operating systems in liaison with the Centre Director, Programme Manager and Lecturing staff.
  • Maintain animal food stock levels to ensure all animals have food and water available as stated in the standard operating procedures
  • To assist in the planning of breeding programmes both for sustainability and food sources.
  • To maintain all animal areas within Life Sciences to include the internal animal rooms and external enclosures
  • Undertake Health & Safety risk assessments and ensure all working practices are compliant with industry legislation (e.g. COSHH)
  • To ensure that accurate records of animals are kept and the data inputted onto computer systems and paper systems.
  • Ensure continuous development and improvement of professional knowledge.
