The Department of Physics is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to provide financial and administrative support for our portfolio of research grants and contracts and associated awards, and to provide additional finance support within the department.
This is an exciting role that works with approximately 70 research active members of academic staff and a portfolio of over 200 research projects from a wide range of funders. You will work closely with two other experienced members of staff to share the workload.
You will implement and manage budgetary systems for effective, timely and accurate financial monitoring of project operating budgets. You will analyse financial data and provide reports and forecasts of expenditure. You will be proactive in proposing solutions to complex financial issues and advising on implications of various options, in conjunction with appropriate departmental and central administrative officers. You will manage administrative personnel issues for projects, helping with recruitment and all associated paperwork and liaising with external departments as required.

Job Description
JOB PURPOSE:
To be responsible for providing the financial and administrative support for several major research grant portfolios.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To act as first point of contact for queries regarding designated research projects; to work in cooperation with the Physics academic and administrative staff and with colleagues within Research Finance and Research and Impact Services.
2. To support senior departmental colleagues and academic staff to develop and implement systems to ensure that the aims and objectives of the projects are achieved.
3. To devise, implement and manage accurate, timely budgetary systems for effective financial monitoring of the projects' operating budgets, and the budgets for associated research projects; analyse financial data and provide reports and forecasts of expenditure; propose solutions to complex financial issues, and advise on implications of various options, in conjunction with appropriate departmental and central administrative officers.
4. To manage administrative personnel issues for projects, helping with recruitment and all associated paperwork and liaising with external departments as required.
5. To develop and implement strategies to achieve effective and visible communication and dissemination for research projects and other departmental initiatives, including website creation and content management.
6. To organise and stage events, on behalf of the projects, including complex activities involving multiple partners, public outreach events and major international academic conferences, occasionally including weekends or evenings.
7. To carry out general finance and office duties including arranging schedules, booking travel, processing travel claims, checking expenditure as required and other duties associated with working in a busy academic department.
