Job Description

The Opportunity


Exciting and rewarding opportunities have arisen at Heysham 2 Power Station to join our highly skilled and motivated Power Generation Team as a Shift Operations Engineer. If you have a background in power generation and plant operations, this may be the ideal position for you. You will undertake a comprehensive training program for a Unit Desk Engineer role, which will lead to your appointment as a Duly Authorised Person under the Location Site Licence.

Primarily, you will be responsible for reactor/turbine unit operations, including the performance of routine surveillance, testing and plant performance monitoring.

In addition to your position as a Unit Desk Engineer, you will be trained and authorised as a Senior Authorised Person under the Company’s electrical and mechanical safety rules.

Being a Shift worker, you will undertake mandatory training and qualification to become an Emergency Scheme team member, whose duties will include the use of personal Breathing Apparatus, in accordance with Site License requirements.

Pay, benefits and culture


The salary range is between £40,069 to £76,406 with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Company Agreement plus Shift allowance. The starting salary for this appointment will be dependent of your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. You will receive 28 days annual holiday plus bank holidays, incremental and competency-based progression and a Company pension scheme.

What you’ll be doing


On successful completion of the training program, you will:

  • Continually and consistently reinforce high standards of performance
  • Ensure that all department activities are carried out with full regard to site licence requirements, statutory regulations, company and local directives, procedures and Safety Rules.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of operations and leadership in directing short-term activities.
  • Monitor and trend plant performance, taking action to maintain plant within its normal operating range.
  • Investigate alarms or adverse indications.
  • Log activities to maintain clear indication of plant status, events and tasks performed.
  • Perform emergency scheme duties for which you are trained, in any emergency situation.
  • Manipulate plant changeovers or perform testing to support the Work Management process.
  • Maintain and reinforce high standards of nuclear professionalism at all times.
  • Motivate and encourage the use of initiative, removal of barriers to progress and contribute to Organisational Learning.
  • Where required, support the business through the temporary secondment from Shift to Day working.
  • Support the Work Management process through the review of work plans and the creation of safety documentation and facilitate the planned / emergent release of plant.
  • Support the outage process (forced, statutory and refuelling) by the provision of resource and technical skills.
  • Participate in and maintain your qualification and training
  • Assists the station with ad-hoc projects, investigations self-assessment within your own field of expertise.


Who are you


You must hold a HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant Engineering subject as a minimum requirement although qualifications appropriate for Chartered Engineer status will be an advantage. Previous experience and knowledge of power plant operation is also advantageous.
