BACKGROUND

TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.

The salary for this position is £27,869 pro rata.

JOB DESCRIPTION

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

The Communications Support Officer will contribute to TRAFFIC’s 2030 strategy by supporting the effective implementation of the communications approaches and programme deliverables. The role will report to the Head of Communications however, close working with the Media Support Manager and other communications team members will be paramount, as this role will be responsible for narrative creation and copywriting tasks supporting broadly the effective delivery of our international presence and outputs.

This role will uphold TRAFFIC’s brand identity and values, provide foremost excellent written, copywriting and copy-editing skills, support communicators within the network and deliver outputs that are well considered and fit for purpose, all ultimately supporting TRAFFIC’s aim to ensure that trade in wild species is legal and sustainable for the benefit of the planet and people.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Create compelling yet grounded content for all communications spaces.
  • Develop compelling and tailored public messaging from outputs relating to our Conservation programme and provide support on copy editing.
  • Build public conversation on selected topics via different platforms and outlets, including social media, blogs, narrative, storytelling and other formats.
  • Support the effort to update and maintain the traffic.org website with timely, relevant and fresh content to drive engagement with the issues TRAFFIC works on in collaboration with the team.
  • Act as a co-lead on social media by curating timely and informative posts using Hootsuite Pro.


  • Deliver outputs that uphold and boost TRAFFIC’s visibility, core visual identity and presence in the public space as the thought leader in the field of wildlife trade, contributing to the effective delivery of the TRAFFIC 2030 Strategy at all times.
  • Aid in the development of new communications approaches and content to enhance reach to broader and increasingly diverse audiences.
  • Work collaboratively and proactively with the immediate Communications Unit and other communicators, and all colleagues within TRAFFIC’s network to maximise opportunities and impact.
  • Actively supports the dissemination and adoption of new communications approaches and tools to the wider organisation.
  • Any other communications-related tasks assigned by the Head of Communications when required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Essential:


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as social and mass communication, media, marketing, journalism, or development communication.

  • Proven, strong professional experience in versatile, extensive and compelling writing, editing and storytelling

  • Fluency in English with excellent English writing skills with working knowledge of any other languages an advantage.

  • Proficient in using Hootsuite Pro or other social scheduling assistants.

  • Ability to adapt writing and editing to a wide variety of communications tools and platforms.

  • Strong writing and editing skills.

  • A high level of organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent teamworking skills.

  • Ability to use own initiative.

  • Desirable:


  • Experience with ArcGIS, Esri, and the Articulate 360 suite and proven experience with video production.

  • Experience with publication layout and graphic design.

  • Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud, with particular fluency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop as well as Illustrator and Premiere Pro.

  • Knowledge of creating dynamic PDFs or similar interactive publication content.

  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS
