Job Description

We are seeking to appoint a Research Technician on a fixed-term contract, aligned with a H2020 EU-funded Future Emerging Technologies project grant entitled “Neuronal networks from cortical human iPSCs for Machine Learning Processing (NEU-CHiP) (www.neuchip.eu). This is a fixed term (until 31st August 2024) 37 hours per week full-time post.

The Research Technician will be part of the School of Science at Loughborough University within research groups of Drs Eric Hill and Paul Roach. The post will provide day-to-day assistance of the research within this highly dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, supporting directly the research related to NEU‑CHiP and the research group as a whole. The combined groups of Hill and Roach have a strong background in iPSC culture and use within neural systems and development of brain-on-a-chip device structures. Due to the nature of the research, we are looking for a dedicated research technician to support tissue engineering aspects of the project and help to develop novel brain-on-a-chip devices. These will largely be focused on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and neuronal cell differentiation with appropriate training provided on specialist instrumentation/ methodologies where appropriate.

This post will require the candidate to work independently and flexibly manage their time to support cell culture needs of the project alongside other group members. Training will be provided for specialist instrumentation/ methodologies where appropriate. The successful candidate will join a broad interdisciplinary team, and may be required to extend their skill base to occasionally support other activities in the laboratory.

The technical role will primarily support cross-disciplinary research in the area of tissue engineering and advanced cell culture techniques within the remit of the H2020 EU-funded NEU-CHiP project, providing high-level technical support, training where appropriate and advice to researchers at all levels. The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day management of laboratory research, implementing good working practice to ensure efficiency of research output via technical assistance.

The role requires: the application of substantial experimental subject expertise: the provision of technical instruction; skilled experimental direction; provision of design-advice; and the delivery of health and safety guidance.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Paul Roach or Dr Eric Hill, by email on [email protected] or [email protected] .
