Job Description

We are looking to appoint an exceptional person to join the new Research IT Hub, delivering Research focused infrastructure and technical IT support. The role holder will assist in the support and development of backend Unix and Windows systems used in research. They will liaise with the network and security teams to ensure a secure and robust service delivery.


St George’s, University of London (SGUL) is a healthcare university and conducts world-leading research in infection and vaccines, cardiology, neuroscience, genetics, public health and more.

The role holder will also play a key technical role in liaising with research staff to help gather requirements, plan, test and implement projects. They will also provide advice and costings for grant proposals when necessary.


Key attributes of the successful applicant include, but are not limited to:


  • Enthusiasm and personal initiative to solve problems, a self-starter with ability to work unsupervised.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining on-premise servers and High-Performance Computing Clusters. (torque/pbs and Slurm)
  • The ability to design server specification from user requirements
  • Experience with hardware specifications and configuration (Dell Servers) including RAID and NVMe
  • Experience with Enterprise Linux (RHEL and clones) , Web servers (Apache, nginx) , DNS (bind, dnsmasq), DHCP and database systems (e.g. MySQL/MariaDB)
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware)
  • Experience with Linux and Windows Networking and Security (VLANs, routing, bonding/teaming, iptables, windows firewall)
  • Experience with Linux and Windows Storage management (LVM, Fiber Channel, iSCSI). Linux clustered file system experience would be an advantage ((g)luster, Ceph etc.)
  • Ability to source and articulate new technologies and adapt them to existing systems
  • Strong scripting abilities, e.g., Bash/Perl/python/PowerShell
  • Experience with Linux automation (kickstart, ansible) desirable.
  • A High level of prioritisation and organisation to manage a high volume of work and priorities effectively
  • Strong organisational, time-management and communication skills
  • Experience of working in a research environment would be desirable
