Job Description

The Department of English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University is in the top ten in the UK for Creative Writing (Complete University Guide 2023). We wish to add to our profile by appointing a Lecturer in Creative Writing. This is an indefinite post, to start 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We are particularly interested in applicants who specialise in fiction writing but would also value applications that offer either scriptwriting (screen or stage) or the graphic novel. Candidates should have a strong profile in teaching and practice-based research as well as concrete plans for future projects and publications.

The successful candidate will have experience of undergraduate teaching (preferably including the design and delivery of their own modules) and will be expected to be able to teach postgraduate modules and supervise doctoral students. They are likely to be expected to teach on undergraduate core Creative Writing workshops as well as on genre-specific modules at undergraduate and/or MA level, and to show the ability to take an effective leadership role in Creative Writing programmes.

The successful applicants will be expected to have completed their PhD or to have publications that could be submitted for a PhD by Published Work. They will also show evidence of a strong set of publication plans in preparation for the next REF, and of public engagement activities related to their research. Our department is actively working to diversify its staff body and decolonise its curriculum, and we particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and/or Ethnic Minorities and others with protected characteristics that are currently underrepresented in our department, such as LGBTQ+ and disabled applicants.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be made to Professor Mark Knight, Incoming Head of Department: [email protected]
