We are recruiting 2 BSc degree apprentices in Radiotherapy Physics. Successful candidate(s) enrol on the BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science Practitioner (Radiotherapy Physics) at the University of West of England, Bristol. This 3-year course combines face-to-face, work-based & online learning, with 3 compulsory 5-day blocks at UWE in each year for practical sessions, tutorials & assessments.
The rest of the learning is based in the workplace at Plymouth for hands-on experience.
Clinical Dosimetrist work in a MDT team and play a vital role in producing patient specific radiation plans for Radiotherapy Treatment, as well as working directly with patient designing individualised immobilisation devices for accurate treatment delivery.
These apprenticeships are for people who have a keen interest in science, a desire to work in patient facing healthcare, work well as part of a team, and have the ability to manage practical training alongside academic study.
The salary is Stepped Pay Progression throughout period of the Apprenticeship.
Year 1 : Band 2 £22,383
Year 2 : Band 3 £22,816
Year 3 : Band 4 £25,147

This post is ideal for an enthusiastic and scientifically minded individual, motivated by the desire to utilise their skills, caring nature and compassion in the healthcare setting, specifically in the treatment of cancer patients.
The apprentice is responsible for following and successfully completing the technical and analytical curriculum and gaining clinical competencies within Radiotherapy Physics. The apprentice will be supported through their training by the Radiotherapy Physics team.
The role will involve regular interactions with a wide range of healthcare professionals, patients, and their relatives.
Successful completion of the apprentice programme is a contractual requirement, failure to progress will result in removal from the apprenticeship programme.
Primary duties and areas of responsibility will be developed throughout the 3-year training programme ensuring achievement of the Band 5 on qualification/completion of apprenticeship. Learning from qualified staff to provide all technical aspects within the scope of practice.
Suitable candidates must be available to start the University course in September 2023 and attend the three, compulsory 1 week blocks at UWE in each year of the degree course.

Clinical
Treatment planning
- Responsible for the import of electronic radiological images (CT/MRI/PECT to afford accurate interpretation for radiotherapy treatment planning purposes.• Independently identifies and delineates critical patient organs and avoidance structures at risk from acute or late radiation damage/ necrosis within patient image data sets.
- Work in collaboration with the Consultant Clinical Oncologist to define the extents of the tumour volume and intended irradiation area. Provide guidance to junior clinical staff (Specialist Registrars) on the tumour definition process.
- Responsible for independent validation and confirmation of critical data relating to tumour position/site against patient data sources.
- Produce a broad range of routine and complex radiation dose plans and carry out associated complex calculations to quantify the radiation dose received by the patient, in accordance with clinical prescription and agreed procedures, using computerised planning systems as appropriate.
- Analyse proposed treatments and make highly analytical judgements regarding treatment parameters and patient radiation dose effects. Using visual objectivity and computerised dose volume histograms, to ensure adherence of dose uniformity and dose critical constraints.
- Advise and discuss with clinical staff the various radiation plan approaches, resulting in an optimum patient specific treatment plan.
- Evaluate requirements for and calculate complex beam modelling parameters affording field alignment for patient treatment plan application.
- Transfer patient critical information to the department treatment management system, presenting the information in a clear accurate format for treatment application.
- Create digital anatomical images to be used for the validation and verification checks required to ensure correlation of the plan parameters with the patient treatment set up.
- Responsible for performing the final independent check on treatment technique, treatment plan data and dose calculations. Prior to issuing for the commencement of the patient’s radiation treatment
