Human Resources Manager

The Role:
Salesian College is currently seeking an experienced HR Manager to be responsible for the delivery of all aspects of an effective and comprehensive HR service including Strategy and Policy, Employee Relations, Recruitment, Selection and Induction, Systems and Processes, Training and Development.
Possessing solid HR Management experience you will be able to demonstrate expertise in employee relations, HR legislation and best practice.
Ideally holding a CIPD Level 5 qualification or having gained substantial experience in a senior HR role, you must possess excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
The post holders’ principal responsibilities are:
Strategy and Policy
- To develop HR strategy that aligns with the overall College development plan / strategy.
- To provide effective HR advice and guidance to the Head, Bursar and other members of the Senior Leadership Team, advising on best practice in line with relevant employment law and legislation.
- To support the Head and Bursar in conducting operational reviews or restructures. To manage and run consultation processes in line with legislation.
- To develop, improve and maintain HR policies. To support senior leaders in implementing and operating HR policies.
- To maintain an up to date knowledge of HR legislative requirements updating the Senior Leadership Team as appropriate.
- To provide reports to the Head and Bursar as requested on HR matters.
- To work with the Bursar on the periodic review of pay and reward arrangements, systems and structures to ensure they are clear, fair and fit for purpose.
Employee Relations
- To ensure employment contracts for all categories of staff comply with current legislation and reflect best practice.
- To provide advice on all Employee Relations matters including restructuring, capability, absence management, disciplinary and grievance procedures.
- To be responsible for the effective management and operation of all restructuring, disciplinary, grievance and capability processes.
- To support managers to deal with performance related matters in a timely manner so that effective interventions can be put in place for issues of poor performance.
- To administer and record all staff absences (liaising with the Assistant Head for Teaching Staff) and ensure compliance with relevant policies relating to staff well-being and absence management. To ensure return to work interviews are completed.
- To monitor absence levels throughout the College and identify trends or areas of concern, producing reports, administering Occupational Health referrals, and discussing recommended adjustments with line managers and senior leaders as appropriate.
- To support and encourage the promotion of staff wellbeing, diversity, inclusion and equality, developing strategies and policies in these areas of work.
- To manage the contracted Employee Assistant Programme (EAP) ensuring it is fully embedded in the College and that staff awareness of services is high.
- To encourage and support healthy work practices amongst staff.
- Maintain and promote the College’ benefits offering and ensure it is updated and reviewed regularly, identifying new and low or no costs benefits where possible.
Recruitment, Selection and Induction
- To assist with compiling job descriptions and person specifications. To ensure a consistent approach across the College.
- To lead on safer recruitment in the College, ensuring an up-to-date recruitment and selection policy is in place and that all recruiting managers are suitably trained.
- To administer staff recruitment including advertising vacancies and organising shortlisting and interview/assessment days.
- To process DBS applications for all staff, volunteers and if required, contractors.
- To be responsible for the College’s single central record (SCR). To ensure: All recruitment checks have been completed. Full compliance with all regulatory requirements, in particular those of the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). It is regularly audited by the Head and Safeguarding Governor.
- To promote and ensure compliance with equal opportunities requirements throughout all aspects of recruitment.
- To oversee, develop and implement induction training and processes, ensuring appropriate health and safety and safeguarding training is recorded for all members of staff.
Systems and Processes
- To implement, develop and maintain HR systems, records and processes to ensure effectiveness and improved efficiency.
- To ensure that all HR operations are fully compliant with Data Protection/GDPR legislation, including the management and retention of all physical and electronic files.
Training and Development
- To develop and maintain a staff training register and ensure all courses are recorded / updated.
- To work with the Deputy / Assistant Heads to agree appropriate termly INSET programmes that include all regulatory updates and training required for staff.
- In conjunction with the Deputy Head (for teaching staff) and Bursar (for support staff), to develop and oversee the management of the external training platform(s) to ensure it provides appropriate learning content for the College.
- To work with the Bursar to develop and embed the performance review system for support staff.

Salary, hours and benefits
Salary
The salary scale for this post is on the College’s Support Staff Spine Points 33-39 (£39,447 - £45,750 per annum full-time (1.00 FTE)). The starting point awarded will depend on experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. The Governors review salaries each year to ensure they remain competitive. Salaries are paid by bank transfer on the 27th day of each month, or the previous working day, in twelve equal payments.
Hours
Applications considered for full-time or part-time working. Part-time working may include less than 37 hours per week and/or a term-time plus work pattern. Please indicate your preferred pattern of working on the application form.
Daily working hours will be agreed with an unpaid lunch break.
