Are you PDA Society’s next Communications Co-ordinator?
Research suggests that as many as one in five autistic people could be PDA autistic. If that’s right that’s 140,000 people in the UK alone experiencing something that most people know nothing about.
PDA stands for Pathological Demand Avoidance and the name is used to describe autistic people for whom any kind of demand triggers a fear response. This is more than not wanting to do something, or refusing to do something, it is the experience of being unable to do things (even things you desperately want to do) if at a conscious or unconscious level you perceive them as threatening your autonomy. For some people even bodily urges like thirst or hunger can be perceived as demands.
Yet autistic people with a PDA profile often don’t get the support they need to thrive. This causes completely avoidable harm and can lead to very poor mental health outcomes. 70% of the PDA community say a lack of understanding about PDA is a barrier to getting help. 81% of PDA people experience severe anxiety; 73% have low self-esteem and 19% experience severe depression. This is not inevitable - support & information make a radical difference.
The PDA Society has over 750 thousand people visit our website every year. On our site and through our social media channels people are seeking to learn more about PDA and how they can improve their own lives or the lives of the people they care about.
The Community Coordinator role leads on ensuring that people can easily find us, and the information they need. They deliver our mission by:
- Increasing our reach and visibility
- Ensuring our communications are clear, accurate and useful
- Creating within our social channels a space for PDA people and the people that care about them to share experiences and support each other
- Encouraging people to take action to support the PDA community
We welcome applications for the full role, job shares or any single/ component of the role; broken down as:
- Social media management, marketing & mobilisation 15 hours a week
- Content creation, information editing & website management 10 hours a week
We work our hours flexibly from home, in order that these roles are as accessible as possible. The social media component would involve daily (Monday-Friday) checks on the interaction with our communities.
Salary: FTE £31,616 per year
